"We- knew we had to
campaign hard, especially
•near the end,"Johns said.
"In the. closing days before
the election, we saw that he
--(Lamont) looked to he
.gaining some ground."
Her primary goal as the,
N1PP'for thc region is to set
up a constituency office
that is in the best possible
place for both counties.
"We need to find a spot
that. works as well as
possible for everyone," she
-Said. "I'm going to work
hard over the neAt4six
-rnonths'to-inform people-
what's going on with their
government."
Johns viewed the
overwhelming PC victory
as a mandate from' the
public to keep the province
'pointed towards a
successful future.
'1 think this victory is
telling us to ensure a good
education -for our children.
a good health care system,
and make our communities
better all-around."
She said she's been
talking to people' in the
riding about what needs to

them. highlighting the
situation with the Bruce
Nuclear • Power
Desclopment and regional
economic development as
two areas she hopes to
focus on.
-: Although Lamont. the
Liberal contender. appeared
to be strong in thenorth of
the riding, that trend
changed around the
-Lucknow-area.
"Obviously the results
are not what we hopedfor."
,aid Lamont. but looking.
,,J rocs Ontario I guess that
trend was there all over. We
didall the things we needed
to-do and we worked hard.
"It's a democratic
process and it's- a great
•process'. "We .may not
always like the results but
ou can't argue with the
process," said Lamont to
party . supporters on
Thursday night.
NDP candidate Tony
McQuail admitted he was
disappointed. -with the
results but said the New
Democrats will continue
their efforts to give people
a brighter .v,ision of the
future.
"Ontario is going to need
lot of vision and hope
e"r ilie"next little while,"
,.ud McQuail. •
He said thc people who
voted the Conservatives
hack into office .will regret
their decision because the
Tory agenda is "polarizing"
society and wiping out the
middle class. .
•
Linda Freiburger said the
"99 election helped make
people more aware of the
BCP.• -
•" This.election proved. we
are an established party, not
a flash in the pan," said
Freiburger. "We earned the
votes. We have people at all
corners and in between the
new riding." she said. "We
have a•good network to
build on."
Freihurger said there are
issues that need to be
addressed -and "we're going
to be here." (with files from

Tte other day. a client
dropped in for coffee and
mentioned that sales'weren't
high enough.. "Well," •I
asked, "what -kind of adver-
tising have 'you been
doing?" He responded,
"None, advertising doesn't
work." Whoaaaaa!
There are ,some fundamen-
tal truths about business.
This one is • called
Anderson's Law:
"Communication Creates
Demand".
You are not in . the hair
dressing business. or the
accounting business or the
manufacturing-'-IiUsiness or
the car business. We are all
in the same business: We are
in the communication busi-
ness. Without commtinica-
tion there is no demand...
Without demand there are
no sales. • "
No understanding is more
important to a business per-
son. Whether you are run-
ning a store downtown or a
garage sale on the weekend
the bottom-line is commu-
nication. If the customers
don't know you are there,
they are not coming to'you!
The three most important
things in business are said
to be location,: location,
location. What is the right
location? The right location
is one that has a heavy flow
of pedestrian or vehicular
traffic going past the door.
The larger the flow the bet-
ter we consider the location.
Your physical presence is a
communication system. You

have a sign. You have win-
dows showing product. That
puts you in the face of every
passerby. When more peo-
ple see your message your
potential volume of sales
increases. The customer
must be aware that you
exist. To put it another way,
"Communication Creates
Demand";
Consider the following list:
your . parking lot, your
office, your advertising,
your signage.. your people,
your lighting, your pricing,
and your inventory. These
are all communication sys-
tems. Everything in your
business sends a message to
potential customers.
Everything in and about
your business either adds to
or detracts from the effec-
tiveness of the message you
are sending to your cus-
tomer. Take a look "around.
What messages are you
sending?
People do not knowthey
want something until you
show them what it is; what
it does, and how they. can
have it. Once you have done
that, they feel they can't live
without it. That is called
demand. The more effec-
tively you manage the com-
munication skills of your
business the more effective-
ly you manage demand for
your products.
Advertising doesn't work?
You can't survive without it.
