Your Residential I Needs m en esimIrl[tialemes ei tesr 1 1 1 1 2 -THE HURON EXPOSITOR, June 2, 1999 Council briefs Town preparing for YaK concerns The town is already receiving responses from letters it has sent to help determine if its computerized equipment is Y2K compliant; meaning they aren't affected by a potential computer problem relating to difficulty with systems reading the Year 2000. Clerk Treasurer Jack McLachlan said they are working with the local nursing homes and Conn. Michael Hak also said they should be coordinating with the hospital to help ensure the town is prepared for any potential problems from the Y2K issue. The school boards have already approved altering the Christmas holiday schedule so the schools are available as shelters should any of the fears that power or other needed services are disrupted by the computer glitch. County mandate on restructuring surprises council Clerk Treasurer Jack McLachlan told Reeve Lin Steffler he was a little surprised to read in The Huron Expositor that Huron County Council has set a deadline for restructuring submissions for September. The county wants all plans in by mid- September and won't approve any proposals until that time, planning to submit them all to the province as one package. -,Steffler, council's representative on county council said, "I have a little trouble with it." She said it seems the recommendations are coming from office staff. when it should have been coming from around the county council table. "I've said as much as I can or am going td say," she said as council members made some comments about concerns with decisions being made by county administration and not councillors. "As long as we're not being dictated to," said Mayor Dave Scott. Bedard receives award Recreation and Parks Director Marty Bedard will be receiving an award Saturday night (May 29) for his work with the Terry Fox Run. Bedard ,has been organizing the annual fund raising run for Cancer research since 1985. Council approved at its May 11 meeting sending Bedard to a Terry Fox Foundation Workshop in Toronto at a cost of $85, --where the award will.be presented. "You deserve the recognition," said Reeve Lin Steffler. He pointed to agriculture as the second largest industry in Ontario. "It's part of the foundation of .our economic strength," he said, adding people have forgotten there was a time when all of Ontario was rural and that, as communities grew, the rural values became a part of the province, such as the need to be able to rely on each other and a person's sense' of community. He wants to keep those values a part of the province. He also said he'd like to offer a tax rebate to new Restruc would take effect J anuary 200I farmers to help them get started. He identified health care and education, the two issues that have been the foundation of his campaign against Premiere Mike Harris, as rural issues. "Are they not the foundation of a strong rural community?" McGuinty asked. He referred to plans that would see medical students practicing in a rural community before they could graduate and a promise to pay their S44,000 medical school costs if they agree to practice in rural areas for five years. Both of those arrangements could be affected by 'provincial restructuring of Ontario Hydro and public utility commissions. Municipal water services would be the responsibility of the new municipality. During the next four months, additional reports will be added by the committee. It will first look at Public Works and how it fits into the new municipality, followed by administration, recreation and finally, any other aspects of each municipality that are affected by restructuring.
