2 -THE HURON EXPOSITOR, June 2, 1999
Council briefs
Town
preparing
for YaK
concerns
The town is already
receiving responses from
letters it has sent to help
determine if its
computerized equipment
is Y2K compliant;
meaning they aren't
affected by a potential
computer problem
relating to difficulty with
systems reading the Year
2000.
Clerk Treasurer Jack
McLachlan said they are
working with the local
nursing homes and Conn.
Michael Hak also said
they should be
coordinating with the
hospital to help ensure
the town is prepared for
any potential problems
from the Y2K issue.
The school boards
have already approved
altering the Christmas
holiday schedule so the
schools are available as
shelters should any of the
fears that power or other
needed services are
disrupted by the
computer glitch.
County mandate on
restructuring surprises
council
Clerk Treasurer Jack
McLachlan told Reeve
Lin Steffler he was a
little surprised to read in
The Huron Expositor that
Huron County Council
has set a deadline for
restructuring submissions
for September.
The county wants all
plans in by mid-
September and won't
approve any proposals
until that time, planning
to submit them all to the
province as one package.
-,Steffler, council's
representative on county
council said, "I have a
little trouble with it."
She said it seems the
recommendations are
coming from office staff.
when it should have been
coming from around the
county council table.
"I've said as much as I
can or am going td say,"
she said as council
members made some
comments about
concerns with decisions
being made by county
administration and not
councillors.
"As long as we're not
being dictated to," said
Mayor Dave Scott.

McGuinty wants rural values
to remain in provincial fabric

McGuinty.
"I want to help our farmers
stay on the cutting edge," he
said.
He pointed to agriculture
as the second largest industry
in Ontario.
"It's part of the foundation
of .our economic strength,"
he said, adding people have
forgotten there was a time
when all of Ontario was rural
and that, as communities
grew, the rural values became
a part of the province, such
as the need to be able to rely
on each other and a person's
sense' of community. He
wants to keep those values a
part of the province.
He also said he'd like to
offer a tax rebate to new

farmers to help them get
started.
He identified health care
and education, the two issues
that have been the foundation
of his campaign against
Premiere Mike Harris, as
rural issues.
"Are they not the
foundation of a strong rural
community?" McGuinty
asked.
He referred to plans that
would see medical students
practicing in a rural
community before they could
graduate and a promise to
pay their S44,000 medical
school costs if they agree to
practice in rural areas for five
years.
He mentioned that tax cuts

Both of those arrangements
