Farm safety stressed to school children
iy Suson Hund.rtmark

Reminding Walton Public
School children of the
dangers on the farms 95 per
cern of them live on was the
focus of a farm safety day
last Friday organized by
parents of the school council.
"Any farm parent knows
that you can tell kids 50
times to be careful but when
you work where your kids
are. as we do on the farm, it
only takes. two seconds .and
they're .gone (because of .a
fatal accident -happening),"
said organizer Rita Bower.
Bower said one of the
rcasons•shc helped organize
the farm safety day was the
death of her own father 21
years ago in a tractor
accident.
The -90 Kindergarten to
Grade 3 students at Walton
Public School were divided
into six groups to hear about
tractor and machinery safety.
chemical safety. animal
safety. motorcycle and all -
terrain vehicle safety and fire
safety.
Brian McGavin, of_
McGavin Farm Equipment
and Bryan Vincent, of
Vincent Farm Equipment.
demonstrated to children
how difficult it is for adults
driving tractors to see them.
"You've got to stay far
enough away so. that
whoever is driving. the
tractor can see your eyes and
you can see his." said
McGavin while looking.
down from the tractor. •
"If ,your mom tells you to
go and tell dad his supper is
ready and he's on the tractor,
should gd near him?"_ he
asked to a chorus of "No"
from the children.
McGavin also stressed how
dangerous if is to ride on the
fender of a tractor.
"What happens if you hit a
bump and fall under the
wheel'' It would squish the.
'gizzards right out of you.
wouldn't it?" he said. •
-
. Both McGavin and Vincent
stressed staying away from
all farm machinery that is in
operation. .
"Make- sure you respect
machinery while it's
running." said Vincent. who
told a story of a "customer
;who cut off. his finger by
grabbing for a clump of grass
inside a riding' lawn mower
, when the. blades hadn't yet.
stopped spinning.
"Fingers don't, grow hack
andthey don't make new
ones_at the hospital."•he said..

Suiting up for safety
Kindergarten student Joelle Glanville dons protective gear for
driving an all -terrain vehicle with help from Brett lee.
"Lots of times we don't think
about it until. it happens and
it:'happens really fast and,
then it's too late."
' The two men walked the
children around equipment
pointing out warning labels
and other dangerous places.
showing that exhaust pipes
get hot enough to burn and
that shields must be closed
against fast-moving parts
that can grab and cut. •
"Exhaust' pipes. get hot and
they can burn your legs. It
the same thing as a toaster -
only worse." Vincent told the,
children. `
• They compared the safety
features of new tractors and
the lack of safety features on
.an old tractor including
reflectors.. lights.. slow-
moving vehicle signs.,
rollover protectors.•and seat
belts.
•And. they pointed to a sign
in a skidsteer loader that
said. ''Avoid-._ death"
reminding people the
machine is designed for only
one person and no riders:
"Avoid death." said
Vincent. "We'd all like to do
thatwouldn't we." he said.
Steve Matisz. of the Farm
Safety Association in
Guelph. discussed power
take -offs (PTOs) with the
children. pointing out how
they turn 540 times a minute.
or about nine times a second.
"It takes a second for us to
think of something 'and do it.
it takes a second for us to
realize there's'a mosquito
biting our necks and to swat
at it. And, in that time. -your
arm could he wrapped'
around- the PTO,nine times."
he said.
He -to
•ld the students. to
"stay away completely" from
PTOs. -which he said are also
called "pull trousers off"
since they are so good at
pulling clothes off of people..
". They're good at pulling
clothes off •and .you're luck
if theydon't pull you in too."
said Matisz.
. He also said that tractors
are the number one killers on
farms. causing 40 per cent of
all farm fatalities. mostly by
running someone over.
"Some of these tractors are.
so big, .little ones could play
• hide and seek in them. A lot
of children are hurt that way
when an adult comes out and
starts them up not.realizing a
child is hiding in there." he
said.
. He also said that while
letting your child ride on the
fender "seems like .a fun
- thing to do. falling off the
fenders can happen so fast
and it's devastating to the
family and commuhity." '
"Parents don't an their
children. terrified of the farm
machinery but they want
them to. be aware of the •
dangers .-said Matisz. •
