and Crop Advisor Brian Hall
points to a few other
concerns farmers . need to be
aware of this season.
With fast week's rain, Hall
said. it would be a good idea
to start spraying herbicides
for weed -control.
Recent windy conditions
hat e made it hard for farmers
to spray,
Hall said some weeds • are
coming up in conjunction
with the crops and those are
the` ones potentially
responsible for thegreatest
yield losses..
Anyone who has already
sprayed will have seen
additional benefits to last
week's rain because
herbicides need about two
inches of rain penetration in
the soil for them to be
•
activated. Enough rain tell
last week to penetrate that-
.deep•in many areas.
With the rain. he also
cautions farmers not to get
deo eager to plant their edible
bean crops (white and
coloured beans),
"If yhu plant too ctrl}•.
they flower in July when it's
hot which leads to lower pod

when they know there's good
moisture in the ground right

"Planting:early doesn't
always translate- into _high,
yields with beans." he said.
Farmers are expecting
good prices for 'edible beans'
this year and Hall said they
are anticipating 50 per cent
more acreage to he planted
this season. Because of that.
the seed supply might not be
big enough to give farmers 'a
second chance at planting it:
