Sparks from a passing train may have ignited the grass and debris along a ditch' near
Harpurhey on fire last week.
A dry summer will increase calls
for firefighters to grass fires
By Scott Hilgendorff
Expositor Editor
While the traditional grass
fire season is ending, the dry
weather means it will remain
a concern throughout the
summer. said Fire Chief
George Garrick.
"We have to he very
careful when everything is
dry," said Garrick.
The Seaforth and District
Fire Department has
responded to four grass fire
calls this spring which
Garrick said isn't necessarily
a lot but there are years when
they aren't called out to any.
In most cases. the fires
have been caused by burning
debris that spreads to nearby
dry grass. One this month
may have been caused by a
spark from a passing train.
Another on Highway 8,
just east of Seaforth, started
in a ditch and Garrick
believes it may have been
caused by someone throwing
out a cigarette Nutt.
Without much moisture
this winter and spring, dead
grass in the ditches was
exceptionally dry this year.
Garrick warns people never
to throw cigarette butts out of
cars because of that danger.
For now, the. risk of
another accidental ditch fire
is diminished with new,
green grass in the ditches but
if the spring and summer
remain dry, the danger will
return.
Garrick warns people not
to leave fires unattended
when they are. hurning
debris. •
"A fire can spread
quickly."- he said, adding
burning on a windy day
increases the risk of a fire
getting away.
"It should be a cairn day."
he said.
Most grass fires occur in
the townships where bylaws
permit open burning.
In Seaforth, Garrick said
bylaws prevent hurning
within 100 feet of any
building. He thinks that
effectively prevents any.
hurning within the town.
With the traditional grass
fire season over. Garrick is
not anticipating anymore
now.
However_. if the spring and
summer .remain dry. he
figures the threat will return.
"It's potentially•
dangerous." he said.
Garrick also suggests when
someone is burning a large
Shed or building, they should
contact Seaforth Community
Hospital. which dispatches
fire calls.. and let them know
in the event passers by call in
the fire thinking it is an
emergency.
Only one fire was large
this season, spreading
through a field.and burning
some trees near Egmondville
but it did not threaten any
farm buildings.
