Parsons points to parents as weak link
in teaching their young to be tolerant
From Pogo 1
I'c.tccntakers program. which

which teaches students non-
controntational ways 3u
ar resolve conflict and to deal
with violence. .
".Every school has a code
of behavior and violence -free
policies and there. are
frequent training ;sessions.
We have excellent programs
hut I don't think you can ever
have enough training because.
til the very intolerant, violent
society we lac in. So many
people think. "11 vou're'not
the same as one. something is
Wrong with you."' she .ay..
. Parsons also points to
parents .ts the weak link in.
the chain of teaching tolerant
and peaceful hehasior. She
says that when the hoard has •
offered programs to parents,
those we attend. are "so
wonderful they could teach
the class" but those who
don't attend are the ones who
need the programs the most.
'All too often, when a
student is suspended. the.
. parents blame everyone hut
the student for the suspensum
and don't teach their kids to
he responsible for their
actions." -she says.
Only . one parent has
phoned the hoard since the
shootings, suggesting that
high school students not be
allowed to carry, backpacks
into the school: Parsons says
that enforcing the school
dress code. which does not
allow students io wear coats
to class. might he a more
logical way to alley tears that
•
a Colorado massacre could
happen here. •
She adds that a partnership
which exists between the
Children's Aid Society and
the school hoard in Huron
County that assigns a social
worker to every school in
Huron is an "invaluable
program" that provides
immediate intervention
whenever students are seen
to be in need.
• "It's a very strong program
and • I'm. working on
extending it . into Perth
County schools," she says.
