Drivers have some responsibility
for protecting cyclists' lives
To the Editor:
I am writing in response to
the article in last week's
Expositor titled "OPP will
target cyclists not wearing
helmets."
As I was reading this article
1 couldn't believe that -
"helmets can reduce cycling -
related head injuries by up to
85%." I think there has to. be`
other factors involved than
just wearing a helmet. The
biggest reduction would he
the speed -of the impact and
second. w.here•the impact
was: 1 realize that a bicycle is
a vehicle ander the Highway
Traffic Act but I'm sure
. everyone would agree that in
a collision the cyclist doesn't
have much of a chance.
- -1 'm not saying that we
shouldn't 'enforce the law of
helmets:.1 would never let
any one of my' children leave
the property without one on.
1 think that we should all
remember that this is bicycle
season for children and we
should reduce our speed if -
we see them. Maybe we have
the right of way on the road

All restructuring plans must

At the April 29 meeting

restructuring plans

Age -Related Macular Degeneration
By: Dr. Louis Lat'lante
. Macular degeneration is a. leading cause of sight.loss
in aging adults. ,It affects. thecentral• retina (ca11>'d the
macula) which is -the area used for seeing fine detail -and
sharp vision. The retina is the lining at the back of the eye
similar to the film'in a camera. Loss of central vision is
the result from a destruction -of light-sensitive cells in the
macula. This makes it difficult .to do common• tasks such
as reading, driving, watching television, or identifying
faces. A, person's 'side Vision usually remains normal.
There are two types of rriacular degeneration. The
more common "dry" form causes the retina to thin and
degenerate over time. Vision loss is gradual and there is
no immediate treatment or cure. In the "wet" form, new
blood vessels in the macula can leak and disturb light-
sensitive tissue causing bi Th iWand-scarring.-This-.type
represents only about 10 percent of cases and may be
treatable with laser surgery in its early stages.. People
should be alert for symptoms of the wet form and seek
immediate optometric help if they notice a sudden loss of
the ability to see clearly, a gradual change in colour vision,
distorted vision, or a dark or empty area appearing in the
center of vision: •
The exact cause of this disease is unknown, but the
primary risk factor is:aging. Other risk factors include
high blood pressure, diabetes: smoking, and'exposure to
ultraviolet radiation found in sunlight:
There are things people can do which might help to
prevent macular degeneration. A fair amount of research
now indicates that eating a low-fat balanced diet, plenty of
fresh fruit and dark green, leafy vegetables may have
therapeutic value. Antioxidants, such as Vitamin C and E,
may also provide some protection. These can now be
purchased as vitamin supplements (Ocuvite, (CAPS) from
your local pharmacy. Wearing sunglasses that block 99 to
100 percent of ultraviolet radiation also reduces the risk,
as does keeping blood pressure under control and avoiding
smoking.
It is interesting to note that researchers are
investigating the possibility•of retinal cell transplants,
which may' restore lost sight. In the meantime, special low
vision devices can help moat people with macular
degeneration learn to use their remaining vision for
reading, watching television and much more.

Sunlight.
but we could save a life too.
I have lost a son to this type
of accident and he was
wearing a helmet. Please
reduce speed and save a life.
This is as important as "wear
your helmet and .save
yourself some money."
