Lisa Wynhofen, from the
society; was at the school last
Wednesday to teach the
students about the disease
and explain the fund raising
project.
She said Multiple Sclerosis
(MS) means "many scars."
"They get scars, hut the
scars get on the inside -of
their body," she said of
people who 'develop the
-disease.
The person's nerves have
scars that interfere with
messages sent by the brain,
through the spinal cord to the
individual nerve.
It can sometimes cause a
person's movements to be
slow or in the wrong
direction.
"The messages get a little

the nerve at all.
"It affects everybody very
different." -
While it isn't fatal, it tan
make life difficult for
someone with MS.
"People that have MS can
still think they way we do."
she • said in response • to
questions from students:•
They were given a chance
to ask questions about the
disease and take part in an
experiment where • one
person, representing the
brain. would whisPer an
action • to a . student
representing the spinal cord.
-The spinal cord would
whisper. . to Wynhofen,
representing and MS scar and
should would whisper the
action to a third student
representing the nerve. But
what the. -brain first
whispered never got to the
. nerve the way the student
would have liked. As a scar,
Wynhofen woulddelay
telling the nerve what to do
or would cause him to do
something different from
what the brain first said.
Symptoms of MS usually
occur around the age of 30
and can include a tingly
feeling. dizziness and the
person is usually very tired.
"Right now. there is no
cure for MS," she said.

the -department would like to
replace thein on a 15 -year
basis. -
But Coun. Michael Hak
asked. "What do they need a
telescopic ladder for? -
He said there aren't a lot of
miles put on the trucks and
they are well maintained. -
Hodgins told -council.
Garrick said it's becoming
harder to get replacement
parts for the older truck and
they are having trouble
keeping it safetied.
- xis may be a tittle elaborate
but this is just a preliminary
start." Hodgins said.
Hak said they don't put a
lot of miles on the trucks.
"I think we've got enough
trucks out there to service the
area. he said:
Deputy Reeve William
Teall said a telescopic ladder
is designed for an urban
setting. He said it's not likely -
the ladder' would be needed
for a barn tire. .
Coun. Heather 'Robinet -
.asked how much a basic
trucic would cost.
Clerk -Treasurer Jack
:McLachlan said Clinton --
purchased one two years ago
that cost more than 5200.000.
Of the four trucks at the
Seaforth department, Hak
said. "They all look in good
shape. We got a new truck' a_
couple years' ago."
"If you look at the trucks
we've got. we've also got an
antique that; look good."
Hodgins said.
He said they . may look
good and have low Mileage-
. but a sitting vehicle still
deteriorates with time:.
Hak said they -still
,shouldn't need a telescopic
truck adding there are two
