Last week, the Court Benmiller women's curling rink defeated British Columbia to win the National IOF Foresters Curling Championships. The event was held at the Maitland Golf and Country Club from March 15 until March 19. The semi-finals started Thursday and the championship games were on Friday. The Court Benmiller rink, representing Southern Ontario. was . skipped by Vicki Culbert. Cathy Murdock was the vice, Laurie. Paquette- was second -and Danielle Theriault was the lead. In women's round robin action, British Columbia had dominated. • The west coasters went undefeated as they downed Alherta. Saskatchewan. Manitoba and Southern Ontario. Southern Ontario finished second in the round robin"with a record of three wins and one Toss. Alberta. Saskatchewan and Manitoba each had one victory and two losses. In the playoffs. British Columhia defeated Alberta to advance to the final. and Southern Ontario defeated Manitoba. British Columhia wins men's national title. On the men's side, the men from British Columhia were the giant killers as they upset the host Ontario rink in the playoffs and edged Kinburn in the Ilth end of the championship final. , The Kinburn men dug themselves a hole early in the final as they dropped two points in the first end and three in the second. They rebounded. however, scoring two -points in the third, one in the fourth and two in the sixth to trail by one. at 6-5 entering the home stretch. British Columhia took a three-point'Icad with two points -in- the seventh. but Ontario responded with two in the eighth and tied the game in the IOth to force an extra end. British Columbia prevailed as they scored two in the 11 th to win. "It sure feels good to win." said British Columbia Skip Glen Wejr whose rink has won the national championship six times since 1981: The British Columhia teat. consisted of Wejr, Donald Druer (vice). Bert Dirven (second) and Wally Kreke (lead)._ Despite falling behind early. Kinhurn.skip Gordon Pryce said the tight finish of the championship game highlighted a week. of excellent competition at the event.. • He said "both teams curled well" in the championship. The Court Kinburn team of Gordon Pryce (skip.), Don Jewitt (vice). Neil Dolmage .(second) and.Neil McGavin (lead) represented Southern Ontario at the event. - The host Ontario team of Chuck Egener (skip). Jon Ginn (vice). John Orr (second) and Adam Culbert (lead) went undefeated in the round robin, but in the first round of the playoffs. were toppled by British Columhia in the 10th end. "We chose a had time to lose that game," said Orr. the president for the national championship. In the other men's playoff, 'the Kinburn team advanced to the final by defeating Alberta. British Columhia, Alberta and Southern Ontario (Kinburn) each finished with two wins and two losses in the round robin. Quebec was defeated in each of its four games. The last time Goderich hosted the national tournament was in 1993. Hope, British Columbia will host the event next year. The curling championship, which cost $8,000 to host, was paid for by the fund- raising efforts of the Foresters.
