Yaroh 114. 1991 Latest scam targets fears from Y2K, hits county BY DAVE ENSUE Clinton News -Record Editor A new scam that preys on people's uncertainty regarding the Year 2000 (Y2K) has arrived in the arca. • According to the Canadian Bankers Association. a new phone scam aimed at bilking people out of their money is currently in operation. Information shared by a local financial institution states that a scam artist will call an individual and claim he is representing a bank. "He tells the individual that • the bank is having difficulty meeting Y2K compliance requirements and that subsequently all bank customers need to transfer their accounts to a bond account that has -been specially designed to protect• their money until the bank becomes Y2K compliant. "He then asks for account information to 'verify that he is talking to the proper person' and requests verbal authorization to transfer funds to this specially designed account.- Community Servis ices OfficerDon Shropshall of the Huron OPP noted that once authorization is given to an account. "you are really giving authorization to clean it out." Shropshall can attest to the fact that the scam is in the area as an attempt was, made to work it on him at his Clinton home. He noted that he received,a call the other day from someone who said they were with the Royal Bank, and were willing to assist in moving money to a safe account: When he was asked for his account, number, he told the person on the line that if they really worked at the bank, then they already knewhis account number. He did not share his banking information. Local residents might consider following the constable's leadwhen it comes- -.to sharing information over the phone. "It is very important you don't give across information," he said. He suggested that if anyone has any questions regarding a caller or the validity of their call, then they can offer to call back, or' ask that information be sent through the mail. "Do not give .information out over the phone.". Shropshall warned. • Michael Kale makes a. handprint with Trudy. Broome, library supervisor on Friday. Town will have influence in liquor policy BY SCOTT HILGENDORFF Expositor Editor Seaforth Council has taken a look at how much power it has within the Seaforth and District Community Centres Operation should a liquor licence be approved for the faciftty. Council is prepared to use its share of power within the Seaforth and District Community Centres arrangement to make decisions on how money generated from a potential liquor licence gets spent. Coun. Michael Hodgins suggested to council at its • March 9_meeting it could control how money ,generated from the licence is used..based on something pointed out to him .by a rate payer. - Thc SDCC is supported by several arca municipalities that contribute funds to offset any operating deficit. Because it contributes a greater percentage to the •SDCC. the town has a greater say in how the facility operates. From what Hodgins was told, he understood that -to mean the town could cause the SDCC committee to refuse to accept funds coming from the liquor licence. However, Administrator Jack McLachlan said his interpretation is that the SDCC board has to puha budget together and council bas the right to reject it. Money from the liquor licence would have to appear in that budget. He said council could not say anything about accepting liquor licence money or not. The town and SDCC board are waiting to hear the 'results of an Alcohol and Gaming Commission hearing held last month to determine whether or not the SDCC would be granted a liquor licence: The original intent was to licence several. areas of the arena and was McMaster Siemon y4- INSURANCE Is-IsrTh BROKERS INC. Cataracts - Are they a need for concern? By: Dr. Louis LaPlante The next several articles will discuss some ,of the problems most frequently encountered in eve -care today. A cataract.is a clouding of all or part of the normally clear tens within your -eye. It is similar to a dandy lens in a camera, which would produce u blurred or distorted picture. It is not a Pilin or gro►Ath over the eye; a common misconception._ Cloudy or hazy vision is the most typical. symptom of cataracts. Glare becomes more annoying and the sharpness of vision lessens at night or: under rainy conditions. - What exactly causes cataracts is not cettain, but it is known that a chemical change occurs :within the eye to cause the lens to change its clarity. This may he 'due. to advancing age, heredity, disease or cigarette smoking.. Excessive 'exposure to ultraviolet radiation in sunlight is also considered a risk factor. For this reason, it's important to protect the eye by encouraging people of all ages to wear. sunglasses that' provide 99g protection against UV light.. • • Fortunately, cataracts ae not threatening to eye health. They are generally a common part of aging and progress at variable rates, from a few months to many years. During this time, it is not unusual to require more frequent eyeglass prescription changes to_maintain good vision. Surgery becomes necessary when, even with prescription lenses, a .person can't see well enough to do daily activities easilyand comfortably. The next important criterion is.whether a person's vision is clear enough to maintain a driver's license. These factors should always he congidered.and discussed during an optometric examination. ' Today's state of the art cataract surgery involves using ft' verysmall surgical incision. The cloudy lens is broken clown into pieces with fine 'instruments then vacuumed from the eye through an incision.' An artificial lens implant is then rolled up and tucked into the eye by -the same opening. This now takes up the space once occupied by the natural lens. this remarkable procedure requires no sutures and heals very, quickly. Eyeglasses or, contact lenses are usually necessary to improve vision at near or fat distances shortly afterward. ' Cataracts should be of no real concern. do .most cases, people can sgee comfortably a long Ume aftet having them diagnosed. When the time comes to ,have them removed, consult with your optometrist to direct you to the best suigeon. It's- also comforting -to know that procedure is one of the most common operations performed in NorthAinerica.
