There's Tae Bo and the 20 -
Minute Work-out, yoga and -
karate. Now, the newest work-
out program to hit the
gymnasium is Vocal Aerobics.
-Vocal Aerobics was recently
offered by the Seaforth
Harmony Hi,Lites as a four-
week introduction to singing
and breathing control - and a
perfect remedy for the winter.
blahs.
The course ran for four
weeks at the Seaforth Public
School and was attended by
more than 17 women. ranging
in age from teenagers to
senior citizens.
The workshops. which ran
for .an hour each session.
included mild .. physical
exercises geared to increasing
hrcath control, along with
%•oval work-outs and learning
a new song.
According to Gail Moffett.
Seaforth Harmony Hi-Lites
president. the Vocal Aerobics
program.offered excellent
health benefits. "Learning to
sing properly is "heart -smart",
she . said. "It stimulates
"adrenaline production, can be
used as a mild aerobic
exercise. develops good
posture. oilers stress.relief.
add can he a productive
leisure activity. It's healthy
and it's fun!"
Margaret Whitmore, director
of the Harmony Hi Lites led
the Vocal Aerobic classes. She
told -the class. ''If you are
going to spend time singing,
you need to warm up the
`voice and the body about 20
minutes before you sing."
She encouraged the
participants. "Think of -your
diaphragm as a' balloon. As
.ou breath in you fill up the
diaphragm and as you breath
out you let it collapse."
The Vocal Aerobic students
studied deep breathing and
stretching. They learned how
to ford words and sounds fbr
choral singing and rehearsed
several songs which they
performed for the Harmony
Hi-Lites and the men's choir,
'the -Harmony Kings.
"Singing in harmony is all
about blending and thinking
about semi -tones. In
barbershop singing the notes
are like a staircase," Margaret
said.
The 25 -member Harmony
Hi-Lites is a chapter of
Harmony, fac., an
international \organization of
women barbershop singers and
has been entertaining in the
area for 15 years. Hi -Liles
members come from across
Huron and Perth Counties.
They practice once a .week in
Seaforth, ,
