Girls Band
must march on
While they Garry an Avon Maitland school
board flag with them' to parades and events
across North America. the Seaforth District
High School All Girls Marching Band has just
.found out.it isn't considered a school group.
And because of it. they face losing $3.700 in..
funding from the board which, is considering all
its funding to "outside" activity groups.
While the band uses school board buses,
practices in school board facilities, is composed
of school board students from across Huron
County and has a band leader paid by the',
school board. they are somehow not being
considered part of the Avon Maitland District
School Board.
How ludicrous.
The students have been representing ,
Seaforth high school and the board for years
and are very much a part of the school system.
To not consider them as part of the school is
wrong.
To consider giving -up -a small amount of
funding for such a worthwhile group is even
worse.
The band has travelled across North America.
.is regularly invited to march in the Toronto
Santa Claus Parade .and should be seen as
nothing short of positive for the board, whose
banner gets taken to all these places.
While its focus may not be on any one -school.
there are too -.many benefits to the board and its
students to consider giving up board funding.
Even in this time of constraint, when schools
face closure, some things are worth. the price.
The Seaforth 'District High School All Girls
Marchinng Band is one of them.

Don't know. much about finances or Christmas trees so :why do people call
Ntrnn, tlly, people hate having to leave a
message on an answering machine.
1 hate-getting-them--
They're
ate getting therm ---They're never for me:
M'. message is simple and identifies the
telephone number the person has called --that
way people know whether or not they've
called the right number.
Or at least you'.d think.
This Christmas. l had a, call from someone
looking for trees. She:heard 1 had some of
the. hest around and. although l can't
remethber the request, she w a, hoping for. a
Specific kind of.tree. •
Last I checked. the only- thing•l was
growing outside my apartment was some
ragweed' that sprouted up through the
sidewalk cracks.
At this point, l had long -since decided not •
to return anymore tnismade messages. •
It just gets too complicated.
Like. last year. when a collection agency
began catling my number. leaving messages
for some guy who was behind in his bills.
They needed him to call right away..
Assuming it was'a misplaced call, ( never
bothered to call back, taking it for granted
they would call hi4r1-at the right number the
next time. LJ.•
What 1 didn't realize is. they had the right
number. The telephone number Bell gave
me.
used to be his.but he had since moved
'around a bit. possibly because of the
telephone calls I began receiving. -
The next call L got from theai was much
more serious. The gentleman was nolonger
polite and insisted 1 get back to them within
a designated number of hours.
Of course, I didn't like his attitude' and L
decided I wasn't about to call him back.
The third tithe. when they were even more
threatening, -L started thinking about the
other guy and how, by not calling back to
sort this out, L was causing him even more
grief. •
1 decided to call back. but collect. Not
knowing bow to, explain in a brief recording
I was allowed for identifying myself (since
they had no idea who I was) L told the
operating 1 was calling on behalf of the
guy's name they were calling for. •
They promptly refused to accept my call.
So 1 called back the regular way and got in-
touch
n
touch with the man who liad been. leaving
file irlessa es.
By this time. he .thought i'_wa3 ilirec"tiv
connected with the bad debt guy and :started
rudely asking me i bunch of questions.
' Now, - h was mad and finally told him I
wasn't about to give him my name, I didn't
know or have anything to do with the guy
they wanted and .then threw in . the,
"harassment' wird. •.
I hung up and never heard back'
I As an aside. a tew weeks later a guy 1
was behind at'an automated teller left his
card in the machine, still active to his
account. asking me if l wanted. another
transaction. For a half -second. 1 actually
contemplated that question before ejecting
the card and recognizing a familiar name on
the front. it belonged to Bad Debt Guy who
I managed to catch as he lift the parking lot
in his pick. up truck. He just looked at me
funny. took the card and drove away without
saying anything. Twice now. 1 had -helped or
tried to help this' -guy and. was starting .to•
Wish I hadn't.)
Most recently. 1 found out more about a
family's financial information than I ever
should have been entitled to.
That started with a call from an insurance
adjuster who needed to arrange an
• appointment to come•and see my house
tremember, 1 live in.an apartmeni,..He never
used any names and I just kind of let that
onegu.-Toed fie atte t tacit U -say ire was Tor
town and could he come hv. Weil 1' was at
w rk as missed that call and again. i let it
go.
Just,when t had forgotten about it. i gut a
'call from another financial agency. They
used the family's name and rattled off a
bunch of financial'inturmation relating -to
that family's situation and adjustments they
were making with the guy who had been
leaving messages on my rnachine a few
week's earlier. They were facts and figures -1
shouldn't have known. • -
1 tried calling back to let them know they
were calling the wrong number but gut lost
in a voice mail system.
They called back •once morel() let "me
know everything was in order and • rattled of
some more figures.
1 couldn't find the family's name in the '
telephone book and wonder -now..if they
ever found out their finances are in order.
Assuming other people experience this
same problem. 1" wonder how often
important messages get missed.
Just last week, the Health Unit left a
msage onsemy machine, trying to reach
soesmeone el.
