HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1999-02-17, Page 66 -THE HURON EXPOSITOR, February 17, 11,119 Township plans for restructuring may be ready by fall BY DAVE EMSLIE - Clinton News -Record Editor , Plans fora restructured community made up of Clinton. and Hullett and Goderich Townships. could be ready and before ,'the public by this fall. According to Laurie Cox. reeve of Goderich Township and • • the chair of the restructuringcommittee for'the three municipalities. the group is working well together onits plans: He noted that "while all three might not always agree on certain issues for discussion. by the end of the meetings - comprorni.es have been reached. Thus lar. the committee has decided on -the political structure for the dew municipality. alottg with the administrative team: Cox said that the recommendation for the political system is "nothing too.radicail." Currently, -plans call for each municipality to have two councillors elected as representatives in the new municipality. "Initially, we felt it was hest that each municipality have two representatives," -the recap stated. He added that later. the system could change to representation by population. ' And .chile each municipality will vote for -its two' representatives. electors will also have the.opportunity to vote for a reeve and deputy reeve. These two positions will be voted on by all in the three municipalities,. ' . Plans for an administrative team that would lead the staff in a new municipality have also gone before councils. Clinton Council, at its last regular session, gave its support to the 'lean that would include a clerk, who would also be deputy treasurer, a treasurer, who would also be deputy -clerk, a tax • collector. a roads manager, chief building officialbuilding inspector/property-standards--bylaw enforcefrte'f"officer, a - facilities manager and a utilities manager.. • Cox stated that in the new municipality, there will be jobs available, for everyone who is on staff now. He added. however. that as therewill be less administration, some jobs may have Tess responsibility. but there Will be jobs there for employees. "All three municipalities have cut back staff on attrition:" he said. "so we're running low on manpower as it is." Cox stressed that the decisions made by the restructuring committee have no legal "standing; as they are just recommendations that will have to go back to councils again when a full plan is complete. The majority of the three councils will have to give their approval.before Huron County Council votes on the issue. If passed by a majority at the county level, the plan will then go to the province for approval. "We're just kind of working away at it." he said; adding. "We'd like to have everything done and 'put before the public this fall."
