The Huron Expositor, 1999-01-27, Page 3Farmerettes represent province, BY SCOTT HILGENDORFF Expositor Editor The Seaforth Farmerettes are going to take on the rest of Canada at the national broomball championships in April. The team learned this month it had a place at the nationals and excitement is growing for the 20 teammates. "Everybody on the team feels really honoured to be able to go and represent the province," said team member Barb Elliott. "It's the highest level you can compete at." Only elite -level . teams compete at the nationals and traditionally, it is the team that earns gold at its provincial level the year before that goes to the nationals the following year. The Farmerettes took silver last year but with two other provincial teams unable to make it to.the finals, Ontario and Newfoundland were allowed to send their silver -placed teams as well. Team member Teresa Finlayson said they were anticipating that situation would arise but it wasn't until the start The Farmerettes defeated Polar Ice in its first game of this year that they knew for weekend's broomball toumament at the Seaforth arena. team will be staving focussed. sure they would be going to The nationals -bound team won the women's division of They still have tournaments New Brunswick to compete. the tournament. HILGENDORFF PHOTO and then the regionals to secure a While new to Seaforth, the spot in this years -round of Farmerettes have been around for more than 35 years, originating in Elora. Five years ago, a coach, Jerry Wright from Seaforth, recruited six Seaforth women to the team after it lost several of its players. They played under his coaching for two years, winning their first 'silver at the provincials in the first year. The following year, they missed the medal rounds and competed at the junior level in the fourth year of having a Seaforth group on the team. That year. they took gold before moving back into the elite level last year for the silver finish. `'It's been a lot of work and a lot of changes in the team," said Finlayson. Seaforth at She said there is a great group of girls with a lot of heart. Everyone encourages everyone and they all give each other a pat on the back. She said that attitude has made a lot happen for the current team. With girls from Barrie. Hanover and points in between, it moved to Seaforth two. years ago because it had evolved to a point where the team's •central core was from Seaforth and women from other points were willing to take a .turn commuting to this region. "We all get along really good, like a family;"said Elliott. adding there's lots of support for one another and they have a lot of fun. "This group now has worked really hard the last three or. four years to get to where we are." she said. "The biggest thing•is our team has a lot of heart." She didn't imagine the current generation of the team would make the' nationals this quickly. Despite the accomplishment. the team still has a lot of work ahead of it. Finlayson and Elliot said one of the of the biggest challenges for the provincials in March. - "You have to keep your focus. We still have to play hard and effectively at the regionals." said Finlayson. At the same time, they also have to start fund raising for the trip to New Brunswick in April. • Between the plane flights. transportation to the games and uniform requirements for the finals. Elliott figures it's going to cost them about S 15,000. . The team held a breakfast at the weekend's tournament here and will be holding another in Clinton this weekend. They have a snowpitch tournament planned for Feb. 20 and a euchre tournament on Feb. 6. Little flooding_ occurred BY BILL LEE - Expositor Co-op Student Predicted heavy rainfall prompted a flood advisory from the Ausable-Bayfield Conservation Authority . t ABCA 1 but little problems occurred. The ABCA released a Flood Safety and Monitoring Bulletin to the public late last week to inform watershed municipalities and the general public of the local watershed conditions. The predicted amount of rainfall for last Friday was 30 to 55 mm with temperatures above freezing expected until Sunday. Tom Prout of the authority said there was the potential for a lot of flooding problems due to the .large amount of water coming from rain and melting snow. Although there were no major problems in the. immediate area. he said there were a lot of flooded basements. This was due to drainage on the property combined .with the amount of water entering the ground water table. The amount of rainfall vaned depending on the area. Port Franks received heavy rainfall due to a thunderstorm, while some areas were mostly dry. While Prout said Seaforth's Silver Creek can cause a problem. none occurred in the Seaforth area. In the past. it has had its share of problems from excess water drainage. A train bridge that runs over top of the creek has caused backups and floods. But there have been very few problems in the past few - years due to an upgrade of the drainage at the bridge. Prout said it is easier to predict Targe -scale flooding than it is smaller -scale floods. The -Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority is closely monitoring weather. forecasts. snow pack conditions and water levels throughout the watershed to assess the tlood potential in watershed municipalities.
