"There was no answer at
her cottage when 1 rapped on
the door and no sign .of her
around.. .1 I enquired of a
neighbour."
It was hard to hear what he
was saying for his voice
dropped to a whisper. He
spoke haltingly as if he had
trouble getting the words out.
"Do you know," he said, "the
neighbour told me she had
died while I was away in
Europe."
He looked away from us.
his head bowed slightly and
he seemed to stare at the
floor, and in the same almost
whispered tone he added, "I
found out later from her
doctor that she -had died at
noon on Sunday - at exactly
the time I was. in Holland
placing the flowers on her
boy's grave."
By this time all the.young
women in the audience were
trying to control their
running mascara...and the
young men had their
handkerchiefs out pretending
to wipe their runny noses.
The minister's moving
ve can make a child happy
story took only a few
, minutes. Leaving lots of time
for him to tell us of the
glories of the government of
George Drew and of all the
great things it was doing for
the people of Ontario...and a
couple of hundred young
men and women were on the
edge of their seats, still
captives of the sentiment and
passion of his words -
soaking in the message about
the great future the province
will have under a Tory
government...and believing
every word.
His story telling style was
something between the
sharpness of Benjamin
Disraeli and the homespun
manner of Samuel Clemens.
He could squeeze feeling and
spirit and soul from every
word and phrase.
Like all the rest, -I was
deeply moved by the
message of this man...the
man most Ontarians knew as.
"Old Man Ontario", Col.
Thomas L. Kennedy.
A .few years later in the
early 1950s, I attended

Unable to get an answer at

former Minister and Premier
was to speak. I was with
Hugh Latimer - the
legendary Tory organizer
whose credits include
winning 21 by-elections in a
row and three general
elections for Premier.
Fros...and like Mr. Kennedy.
Latimer's father ran a
country store in a rural area
of Ontario.
Hugh and Tom Kennedy
were close friends - I knew
that. So I said to Hugh, "do
you think you could get Mr.
Kennedy to tell that same,
story he told us a few, years
ago in Gravenhurst?" "You
kndw, the one about the old
lady in Caledon East

surprised when Hugh said, "l
don't think he will, for he
won't remember•it."
I just couldn't believe this
for it was the kind of story
and story teller I knew I
could never forget...soon I"
was, sorry I ever mentioned
it.
Hugh grinned and said, "He
can'ttell that story because it
never really happened," "he
made it all up - he is a great
story teller." Hugh walked
away laughing...as if he' told
me something I should have
known.
In 1960, I began to.
understand Tom Kennedy.
He had died a year earlier -
forty years after he first
became the member of the
legislature for the riding of
Peel in 1919.
There were a few lines in a
book on the life of Kennedy:
written in 1960 by Ralph
.Hyman. Ralphhad been a
Queen's Park reporter t'or the

. The small hard covered -book
was published by the Globe

Ralph wrote;. quoting Mr.
Kennedy. "we believed in
Santa Claus far longer than
children do today," "Oh I
know what they say about
fairy tales and fables - but I.
am a great believer in make

The Healthy Babies, Healthy
Children Program is designed
to ensure that all Ontario
families with children
(prenatally through age six)
have access to the supports
and services they need while
raising their children.
The program was introduced
in Huron County in January.
Although this program is
administered by the Health
Unit, a network of parents and
service providers, including
physicians, hospital staff,
childcare workers and other
service representatives have .
• come together to plan the best
way to support young families
in Huron County.
Since Jan. I families in
Huron County and across the
province have been screened
by hospital nurses or their
midwife to establish their
strengths and identify where
they might like some support.
