Skateboarders's ramps
dumped
A group of local
skateboarders is upset that
ramps they built and used at
the arena parking lot were
taken to the dump by arena
staff.
"We just want a place to
put our ramps," said Curtis
Wilson, one of about six
skateboarders who, with the
help of some parents, built
ramps and other equipment to
use at the arena.
They understood they
could use the arena parking
lot as long as the ramps were
put away at night.
Staff said the ramps had
been left out in the evening
when the parking lot was
being used by an arena event.
Rain cancels flower show
Corn is at risk, a flower
show has been cancelled and
Egmondville residents have
been asked to stop watering
their grass for fear it could
diminish the water supply.
It's all part of one of the
direst summers this area has
seen since the early 1980s.
"It's been hot for so long
the flowers have come and
gone so quick," said Eleanor
Horst, president of Seaforth
Horticultural Society.

Child of Chernobyl visiting
Viktoryia is a little shy. At
10 years old, she likes Barbie
dolls, Disney movies and
eating bananas.
But unlike other girls her
age, Viktoryia Marartsova has
grown up under the shadow
of the Chernobyl nuclear
disaster of 1986.
About 70 per cent of the
radioactive fallout from the
reactor landed in Belarus, her
home country, and is the
reason she is spending about
six weeks with a Seaforth
couple, Len and Donna
Teatero, for a chance to eat
fresh fruits, drink clear water
and breathe fresh air.
Rain came too late for most
crops
While we got about 90 mm
of rain this week in the area,
it's too little too late to be of
much good for the corn and
soya bean crops.
Dirt bikers descend on
Walton
Some of his motocross
buddies used to call him
"Brain Dead."
But now a better nickname
for 18 -year-old Chris -Tyndall
of Holmesville would be
"Smart," says fellow racer
Brett Lee, 23, of Walton.
Tyndall is one of the racers
who will be at the Canadian
National Motocross
Championships being held
Thursday through Sunday in
Walton. More than 10,000
people are expected for the
event.

Johnston wins pair of
medals
While Seaforth sweltered in
oven -like heat and humidity
two Saturdays ago, Kate
Johnston of Egmondville was
shivering in 15 C
temperatures at Prince
George, British Columbia.
Despite the chill, she
managed a gold -medal throw
of 31.09 m in the discuss in
the under 15 age class at the
Royal Canadian Legion
National Track and Field
Championships.
CEO will hold two positions

becomes acting chief
executive officer of Seaforth
Community Hospital at the
end of this month, "will
maintain his position at
Stratford General Hospital on
a part-time basis while
assisting our hospital until the
establishment of a new,
consolidated administrative
structure," according to an
Aug. 11 announcement by
SCH's board of directors.

University of Western
Ontario with family medicinc

Chilean agricultural
engineers visit Staff -area
farms
Two staff -area farms are
well worth visiting. In fact, 11
agricultural engineers and
farmers from South America
came to see them.
The group, from the central
valley of Chile, visited
Roschank Seed Farms (Lorne
and .Roger Fell) and Hilton
Whole Grain Millers (Barry
and Karen Mahon), hoth of
RR2, Staffa, as part of a two-

of Canadian farms.
Tax increases not nearly what was expected
September 2, 1998
Horrific tax increases not
being seen in this area
Seaforth residents seem to
have been spared the 70 per
cent tax hikes some tax
payers have seen in other
municipalities through
changes in assessments and
taxation this year.
In Seaforth and Huron
County, the situation
appears to be normal and
there has been no increase
in the number of rate payers
seeking to appeal their
assessments.

School starts on schedule
but teacher talks break
down
Public high school
students in Huron and Perth
Counties are back at school,
but for how long is
anyone's guess.
Talks between the Avon
Maitland District School
Board (AMDSB) and the
teachers' union broke off
last Friday without any
agreement being reached.
Fences a must
Pool fencing bylaws need
to be enforced.
That's a message to
municipalities from a Huron
County public health
inspector and an OPP
officer after two recent
incidents involving private
swimming pools and young
children.
Skateboarders giving up
on part at arena
While the community
centres board is working on
a solution for skateboarders
who began using arena
property this summer, the
make -shift equipment made
by the six young
skateboarders has been
smashed.
The group had been using
the property with an
informal agreement with the
arena manager while the
community centres board
examined the situation.
Vandals wrecked the
equipment and the
skateboarders gave up on
using the property.

Diocese wants parish to
reconsider
A building does not
neccessarily a "church"
rpake, even if St. Columban
Parish is one of the oldest in
this province, according to
the Diocese of London.
It wants the near by
parish to think again about
repairing its Roman
Catholic Church, closed
since last September
because of serious structural
problems.
"Simply put, our concern
is that the money needed to
repair the building is
beyond the means of your
parish," and Aug. 28 letter
to parishioners from Rev. R.
Anthony Daniels, moderator
of the curia, states.

Kids at home, school is
pool
Water. water all over the
place.
It gave students at
Seaforth Public School an
unexpected holiday
Monday.
A waterline broke of "old
age" in the boys washroom
sometime on the weekend
turning the school into a
sauna and leaving one to
two inches of water on
much of the floor in its
wake by 3 p.m. Sunday
when it was first
discovered. '
Terrific trio
The tally is 52,714 and
still counting with 74
participants for Sunday's
"Terry Fox Run" in town.
But three long-time
participants. Gilbert
Vansteclandt and Gary Va,n
Loon families, hoth of RR 2
Dublin. and Ken Cardno of
