Hlgh school hanging on
A day before the fate of
Seaforth District High School
(SDHS) was to be decided,
local trustees have at least for
now withdrawn their
recommendation to close the
school.
Paul Carroll, director of
education for the Avon
Maitland District School
Board, said in an interview
Monday that due to shortages
in the provincial
government's new education
funding model, the site
review committee had
decided to call off their
earlier recommendation to
convert the current SDHS
into the new board office.

top five list, treasurer wary
of funding figures
According to provincial
government figures, the
Huron -Perth Catholic District
School Board is one of the
top five "winners" of all
Ontario school boards in the
new funding model it
recently released.
Those government figures
show an 8.4 per cent increase
to $27,070,255 in operating
revenue for the area separate
school board this fiscal year.

Coun. Ball resigns
Coun. John Ball submitted
his resignation to Seaforth
Council last Tuesday night.
The Balls recently sold
their house on John Street in
town. As of April 26, Coun.
Ball's resignation states, "I
can no longer serve because I
will no longer own property
in town."
St. Columban to repair its
church
The congregation decided
to repair St. Columban
Roman Catholic Church,
which has been closed for
seven months, at a packed
meeting in the school gym in
the near by hamlet last
Thursday night.
Estimated cost to repair
this "first Catholic Church on
the Huron Tract" is
$398,860, significantly less
than the • $696,615 first
projected last fall.

In a report that outlined
strategies for dealing with
the Avon Maitland District
School Board's (AMDSB)
headquarters question and
school accommodation
review, one of the approved
recommendations was that
there would be "no action
taken on any school closure
matters for the school year
1998-99."
Work on Seaforth's water
tower almost done.
Seaforth's new water tower
is 86 per rent finishel and it
could he in use next month.
PUC manager Tom Phillips
said the project, for which
plans began about 14 years
ago, is running right on
schedule. •

New search begins for
Mistie's body.
While Ontario Provincial
Police prepare for a new
search of Lake Huron to find
her body, Child Find is

campaign for missing Mistie
Murray or Goderich.
Murray, formerly of the

New building planned will
fill hole on Main Street,

filled. At Tuesday night's
regular meeting, council
passed a bylaw approving a
site plan agreement with

big fire destroyed the
previous building a couple of
years ago.

Friends of high school urge
action
Organizers tried to fan the
flames of their crusade to
keep Seaforth District High
School from closing at an
open meeting billed "urgent"
at Town Hall last Thursday
night.
Maureen Agar, Dick
Burgess and Jane Powell,
along with Charlie Smith and
other "Friends of Seaforth
District High School" who
spoke at the front of the
room, urged the 40 or so
people in the audience to
keep the faith --and the
pressure on, by bombarding
trustees with their points of
view and filling letters to the
editor columns, among other
tactics.
Carroll resigns from town
committees
The director of the Avon
Maitland District School
Board, Paul Carroll of
Seaforth, has withdrawn from
participation in tow of this
town's committees- the
business retention and
expansion committee and the
"Celebrate Scaforth's
History" (museum)
committee.
Carroll gave notice of his
decision to Seaforth's deputy
clerk, Cathy Garrick, by fax
on April 16.

WINTER PROGRAMS '99
FURNITURE REFINISHING - Carol Humphries will guide
you through the stages of stripping off the old finish then show
you the proper techniques of applying the new finish. Make
that old piece of furniture new again. You will be amazed. This
program is held at the High School Shop Room on Monday
evenings from 7:00 to 9:00.
DOG OBEDIENCE- Who said you can't teach an old dog new
tricks. Come see for yourself during Anita Hansen's Dog
Obedience Classes. Anita will teach you how to control your
dog. After this program they will walk nicely by your side, sit
and stay'and much more. Dog Obedience is held at the Seaforth
& District Community Centres on Tuesday evenings from 7:00
to 8:00 pm beginning on January 5, 1999. Registration fee is
$45.00 for 10 weeks. Advanced classes are available upon
request.
WOOD WORKING - Come out and create your own piece of
furniture. John Lansink will guide you through the steps of
making your own project from scratch. Build a table, chair,
book shelf, bird house or whatever you want. Wood Working is
held of the Seaforth High School Shop Room on Tuesday
evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. beginning on January 3, 1999.
Registration fee is $45.00
LEARN TO DANCE - Have you been afraid to get on the
dance floor? Are you uncomfortable with your dancing? If so
come out to the Seaforth & District Community Centres each
Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. beginning on
January 6, 1999. Marie Little will guide you through the waltz,
the two step and much more. This 10 week program Will cost
$70.00 per couple.
VOLLEYBALL & BASKETBALL - These.program are
available for men and ladies interested in a little exercise and
lots of fun. Both' programs are played at the Seaforth District
High School. Volleyball on Wednesday evenings from 8:00 to
10:00 p.m. beginning January 20, 1999 and basketball is held on
Thursday evenings also 8:00 to 10:00 pm beginning on January
7, 1999. Registration fee for each program is $30.00.
