Blyth announces 25th anniversary playbill
Blyth Festival's distinguished 25 year history of presenting
new Canadian plays will be celebrated during the 1999 season
by introducing five first-time productions of plays created by
our country's most popular writers.
Blyth's Silver Season will open with That Summer by pre-
eminent playwright David French, author of Canadian classics
Leaving Home, Say Water Moon and the ever popular Jitters.
Opening on June 25th, That Summer is a romantic evocation
of young love destined to restore audiences to their youth
whatever their present age.
Unadulterated comedy joins the line up when Big Box by
Dave Carley opens on July 2nd. Big Box is an outrageously
funny detective story set itrthe near future when the shops on
Main Street Ontario have gone -the way of the dodo. Where
can Canadians buy socks when a serial bomber begins to
eliminate the retail giant on the highway?
Then Ted Johns, the Blyth Festival's most popular star ever,
will light up the stage with a new one-man extravaganza

Funding extended for healthy babies in Huron
Provincial funding in the
amount of $100,000 was
extended to the Huron
County Health Unit to
continue delivering the
Healthy Babies, Healthy
Children program in 1999.
• "We received base funding
of $33.000 along with
$67,000 of "enhanced"
funding." said Marlene
Price. manager of the
program at the Huron
County Health Unit. "The
enhanced funding will go
toward increasing the home
visiting program by Public
Health Nurses and Parent
Resource Visitors and
delivering prenatal screening
, throughout Huron County."
Research indicates that the
first few years of childhood
are critical in establishing
the foundation for a child's
health and lifelong social,
emotional'and intellectual
development. The Healthy
Babies. Healthy Chil4ren
Program is designed to
'ensure that all Ontario
families with children
(prenatally through age six)
have access to the supports
and services they need while'
raising their children.
The program was
introduced in Huron County
in January. Although this
program is administered by
the Health Unit, a network

Zealand and South Africa.

will be sharing their lives with
Canadian families while
attending local high schools
for five or IO months begin-
ning January, 1999.
"Hosting a student is a great
experience for the entire fami-
ly, and it's a great way for a
community 'to learn more
about a country's culture,"
said Julia Lubczynski, who
heads up the local branch of
STS in Ontario.
Being a host family means
opening. up your home and
way of life to a teenager from
another country just waiting
for the chance. to live and
learn with a Canadian family.
• Host families provide meals,
accommodation. supervision
and care during a student's
visit to Canada.
The students participating
in the program have interme-
diate levels of English. and
chose Canada for its friendly
people and beautiful natural
areas. All of the students arc
fully insured and are. responsi-
ble for their own spending
money and clothing
allowance.
The students will be arriv-
ing in Canada in late January
and returning home after com-
pleting a semester or year in a
Canadian high school.
"Each student is very differ-
ent, and we spend a lot of time
trying to match students with
families who are interested in
the same things," said
Lubczynski.
STS is a non-profit organi-
zation that started 40 years
ago in Sweden. The organiza-
tion's goals are to build under-
standing between peoples of
different countries and cul-
tures. Today. STS has offices
in 12 European countries,
Australia, New Zealand, the
United States, South Africa
and Canada.The Canadian
national office is located in

of parents and service
providers, including
physicians, hospital staff,
childcare workers and other
service representatives have
come together to plan the
best way to support young
families in Huron County.
Since Jan. 1 families in
Huron County and across the
province have been screened
by hospital nurses or their
midwife to establish their
strengths and identify where
they might like some
support. With the mother's
permission this information
is shared with the Health
Unit.
A public health nurse then
contacts the family and helps
them identify and connect
with community services
that are available.
Being a parent isn't easy
and some families face more
challenges than others. If a
family is involved _with
several services, a service
co-ordinator . • may he
identified to help families
co-ordinate the services
availahile to them.
A new service within the
program is the Parent
Resource Visitor. They, arc
people from the community
who have received training
and are able to lend support
to families.
Between Jan. I and Sept.
30 of this year, 543 babies
were born to Huron County
residents. Through Healthy
Babies. Healthy Children
122 of those families have
received assessment and
support beyond what our
local public health nurses
routinely offer. Parent
Resource Visitors have
worked with 11 families.
Referrals to the program
can he made by physicians
or other service providers or
by parents themselves by
calling Marilyn King, public
health nurse responsible for
the Healthy Babies. Healthy
