Green Community project
targets Huron County
BY DAVE EMSLIE
Clinton News -Record Editor
An environmental project
which could grow to
encompass the whole of
Huron County was officially
launched in Clinton recently.
The Huron Green
Community project, which
has assessors visiting homes
in Clinton and St. Joseph's to
give energy and water saving
tips, was officially launched
with a ribbon cutting
ceremony at the Clinton
Town Hall on Nov. 25.
Carol Mitchell, reeve of
the Town of Clinton, noted
the project is a good example
of how many groups can
work together towards a
common goal.
She said the project has
received good feedback from
those home owners who
have had an assessment
conducted, and stated, "We
would like to see it grow
througl ,t Huron County.
We'd 1 o see it grow
quickly
,ichol from the
Hui,,„ Business
Development Corporation,
the chair of the steering
committee for the Green
Community, stated there are
significant economic
advantages to running this
type of program. With the
project now running only in
Clinton and St. Joseph's, he
said there will be an
estimated $2 million in local
spending.
He, too, stated that while
the project is being launched
in only two communities, it
is intended to be a permanent
project, "We'll be looking at
new communities to move
into," he stated.
Program manager Deb
Zehr was the final speaker
before Mitchell cut the green
ribbon. She passed on thanks
to the steering committee
and shared the news that
already 228 green -ups, or
assessments, had been
completed
Tented city will be large part
of 1999 plowing match operation
by PAT DOWN
A former MPP and cabinet minister:
commodity hoard chairmen past and
present. former reeves. local businessmen,
retired farmers. young
farmers and their spouses.
What do these people have in common?
The 1999 International Plowing Match
tIPMJ.
More specifically, these people are
members of the Tented City Committee for
the local Huron IPM, which comes to
Dashwood on September 21-25.
They have been meeting for well over a
year lc') make preparations for the 1999
Tented City site. ,
Which way do the 'streets run? What
should they he called?'How many gates do
we have? How should they he decorated?
These are just a few of the many
decisions this committee has had to make.
The hest way to do this has been to set
, up smaller committees who wrestle with
these various questions within their
groups. The sub -committee chair then
reports to the'tented city committee.
Overall Tented City chair, Jack Riddell
and, his, wife Anita have capably guided the
tented city committee, for over a year. Bob
Down and his wife Pat arc the vice -chairs.
To get an idea of the enormity of the
operation. here's what the following sub'
committee heads and their memhers are
responsible for.
Sanitation: Earl Keller is in charge of
keeping tented city clean. Various groups
under the supervision of Judy Dougall and
Arnold Mathers will pick up the grounds
and clean specific commercial buildings
every day. Earl also has the job of ensuring
there are enough 'clean "Johnies on the
spot".
Site Preparation: Ian McAllister and his
group thought that they were in charge of
street signs but he also is responsible for
the five gates and how they will be
decorated as well as a few other areas that
need landscaping.
Security: Rob Hoffman is in charge of
fencing tented city with three miles of
,now fence which has been donated by
Hensall Co-op. His tug of war team has
taken on the task of getting all the posts in
straight and the fence
wired in place. Rob knows how to keep the
site, secure during the match because he
checked out how well the Kingston site
‘+as patrolled during the wee small hours
of the morning.
Trailers: Bob and Mabel Hern have
secured 13 trailers for office space for
everyone from the treasurer to our own
tented city office to a communications
headquarters. They have also found
bleachers and picnic
tables for tented city.
Heavy Equipment: Jim McCann is
responsible for getting' the vendors in and
out of tented city. Jim is in charge of
maintaining the streets. one of the most
variable and challenging positions at
tented city. Depending on the weather, Jim
may be in charge of mud or dust.
Carpenter: Hubert Miller will be the
general handyman for tented city. He is
responsible for constructing a floor in the
Ontario Plowmens' Association
,Headquarters. He is In charge of a ramp
where exhibitors will unload and load. He
will be the man to see if you want the grass
on your lot cut.
Disability Transportation: This is a new
committee headed by Elaine, Hayter. Her
group will be responsible for
transportation of seniors and disabled
around the site. Elaine is going to be
looking for golf carts ,and
experienced drivers .to handle this
important service.
Supplies: Harry Dougall will have his
hands full supplying ice, wood chips. hay.
straw and fuel. Weather will play a big part
in determining just how much of any one
thing the exhibitors will need.
Water Lines: Bill Weber has the
important job of getting water to and
around tented city. His group is
responsible for _laying the water lines and
making sure tented city is well suppled
with water. After the Kingston
match, his group rolled up the plastic pipe
that we will use, so they arc half, done with
their Work.
The Tented City committee's first
challenge was bringing hack everything
from the 1998 IPM in Kingston to
Dashwood. Volunteers and Len Veri's
trucks made a big
job seem like fun. •
Chance to buy tickets early
If you need any suggestions for those
hard to get Christmas gifts, the Huron IPM
has a deal for you. The committee is
offering the chance to purchase a week's
pass for the IPM in advance.
There is so much planned for the tented
city that you will not have any trouble
using the passes. With the continued
support of all the volunteers, they are
looking forward to "Huron Shines in 99".
