Grade 4 students at
Seaforth Public School are
trying to help Canadian
peacekeepers spread
Christmas cheer in war-torn
Bosnia this holiday season.
Students were busy
packaging small boxes with
gifts, crafts and necessities
to be sent to Belleville.
That's where about 1,300
Canadian soldiers are about
to leave to serve in peace
keeping roles in Bosnia.
Thcy wanted to be able to
take one box each to give to
children on Christmas when
they arc there.
Bill Farnell, the students'
teacher, saw an article in
The London Free Press
containing an appeal from
the peace keepers who were
looking for support in the
effort.
"It just struck me. I've
heard 'such terrible stories
from Bosnia," said Farnell -
whose students leaped at
the chance to help other
children when he asked
them if they would be
interested.
Parents and members of
the community gave the

clothing items like mittens
and socks, tooth hi'usties,
toothpaste, ' pencils.
crayons. paper pads and
other small items that could
he used.
Packages were made for
boys and girls, in different
age groups and 40 were
shipped out on Tuesday. ,
Farnell said they were
urpfised with the amount
of support' the project
received . in the short
amount of time the students
had to prepare them.
Everyone from staff and
businesses to a local cub
pack helped out.
The cubs donated their
dues for that week to buy
enough items to fill one of
the packages.
"It's a wonderful
project," said Farnell. "1
think part of life is taking
care of others. We're here
to help each other."
One student, James
Wilkinson, with the help of
classmates researching the
subject, has put together a
binder full of information
about Bosnia and the
situation in the former
Yugoslavia.
Farnell said Wilkinson
has become the class expert
on the subject.
Wilkinson said he wanted

Accreditation prognosis looks good for hospital
BY SCOTT HILGENDORFF
Expositor Editor
The prognosis looks good
for Seaforth Community
Hospital after the preliminary
• report from an accreditation
team was reviewed Friday. '
"We feel positive about the
survey," said ,Administrator
Andrew Williams.
A detailed -.look. at the
hospital was conducted by
Canadian Council of Health
Services Accreditation
(CCHSA) on Thursday and
Friday.
The process is conducted
every three years and is done.
on a voluntary basis •hy the
hospital.
"It's really an external audit
of our service provision." said
Williams.
After all aspects of the
hospital are examined, a report
is prepared, reviewed by an
accreditation board and. within
about 45 days,the hospital is
informed of what its
accreditation award will be. It
is also given recommendations
for improvement.
"We basically use it as a
learning opportunity," said
Williams.
In their informal report to
staff on Friday, .the two
accreditation surveyors offered
only a few suggestions for
improvement, focussing on
how well the various "teams"
or departments in the hospital
were operating.
The surveyors are peers in
the hospital community who
work with the CCHSA in its
role to help hospitals assess
their performanoc.

community.
She said Scaforth provides
an example of hoar. that kind
of team can wort. effectively
Among many observations
made• she said there is
excellent - communication
between the medical team and
arc nursing homes and other
areas of the community where
patients go for support after
leaving the hospital. •
Two patients were
interviewed during the process
and Tuck said, "They were
very complimentary of all staff
and all care." .
She was pleased to•sec the

Dr. Paul Truscott. the .other

pointed to the uniqueness of
the Sdaforth 'hospital having a
24-hour switchboard.
Three members of the
environmental team have been
assigned to look at potential
computerized pitoblems known
at the Millennium Bug. which
also pleased Truscott.
He was impressed with the
history the leadership and
management team .s and the
performance appraisal system
the hospital has in place.
He was also impressed with
the hospital's "no restraint"
policy where restraints air not
used on patients. •
"Your integration into thc
community is extensive," he
also noted.
They pointed to the hospital
auxiliary's recent "tree of
lights" celebration which
raises, funds for the auxiliary
and is a community event.
They said the willingness of
the community to support the
hospital is a positive sign.
Among the 'preliminary
recommendations for change
arc the • need for more aids for
the elderly like grab bars on
walls, considering the hospital
has a high number of senior
patients.

While documentation in
patient charts was considered
.excellent, staff were, cautioned

used so information could not

wrong lines.
"Every effort needs to he
ihade to ensure all staff are
•aware of their responsibilities
in all codes." said T iscott.
The surveyors also
suggested adding a member of
the clergy to ,any of the
working teams the hospital has
in place.
"They were very open and
frank with us Y.said Williams.
He commended all parts of
hospital staff -who worked hard
to get ready for 'the
accreditation process and said
they are looking forward to the
results.
While it could take a little
longer than 45 days because of
the holiday season. the results
should be available early in the
new year. .1
The hospital will either he
informed it is receiving
accreditation or it is receiving
non -accreditation.
The accreditation comes in
one of three levels: the first is
a three-year accreditation, the
second is a three-year
accreditation which requires a
report made by the hospital
showing the accreditation
council it has followed upon
certain recommendations and
the thiel requires an additional
spot-check sometime during
the next three-year period.
"I think accreditation is a
very important process for
hospitals to go through." said
Williams.
