The Huron Expositor, 1998-12-02, Page 22 -THE HURON EXPOSITOR, DECEMBER 2, 1998 Parish being given time to regroup FROM Page 1 • traditionally 'called parishes or missions (without a resident pastor) within the Diocese of London's domain. St. Columban's most recent church was closed because it wasn't • safe in•September 1997. The parish is 166 years old, dating back to 1832. Parishioners worshiped fir a short time late last year at the school adjacent to the church, but a mass for them was soon added to the St. Patrick's Church schedule in Dublin. Other parishioners had been worshipping at St.. James Church in Seaforth in the interim. Fr. ' Tony DelCiancio continued as pastor for the St. Columhan parishioners, and remains the priest for the other two churches in the former cluster. Services returned to St. Columban last month, with Fr. Paul Mooney, a retired priest living in the hamlet's manse. in charge of services at the Knight's of Columbus Hall. Diocese business administrator Brennan reaffirmed on Friday that St. Columban parish has been given the go ahead to pmceed with repairs to make its church safe for occupancy. at an estimated cost of between $25.000 and $50.000. . He said the diocese and parish's ad hoc committee are now negotiating for a consultant to oversee this work. Two engineering studies done since the church was closed vary significantly in how much money it will cost ,to r:nair St. Columban's church. Brennan says the diocese has had independent verification of the study that suggested the higher cost, indicating "major structural deficiencies which will need auention at a cost of between 5400.000 and $800.000..' according to its Aug. 28 mailing to parishioners. The diocese suggested in that setter that the money needed was beyond the means of St. Columban parish, and financial donations would be better used to enhance the parish's future. rather than mortgaging it. - When the church.closed 14 months ago. St: Columban parish had 98 families and 318 members. About 85 people attended Fr. Mooney's ,first service in St. Columban two Saturdays ago. 1 Mike Hodgins (Lions) and Pat Jibb of the Thamesford Lioness Twirlettes.worked with other Lions Club members to serve up hot dogs and cider at the Roundhouse following the Lions Santa Claus Parade on Friday night.
