Lose twice on weekend
Cents cling to third, Stars climbing
A sluggish first period sunk
the Centenaires at Parkhill
Saturday night where they
fell 6-4 to the team sneaking
up on them in the standings,
the North Middlesex Stars.
On the heels of Friday
night's 4-1 loss to the
Lambeth Lancers at the
Seaforth arena, the Cents
cling to third place at the
moment. with a record of
eight wins and 13 losses, in
the Morenz Division of the
Ontario Hockey
Association's Junior
•"D"evelopment League.
They are two points ahead
of North Ivliddlesex, in the
fourth and final playoff spot.
in the Morenz standings, but
the Stars have four games in
hand. and three fewer losses.
Those Stars made short
work of Seaforth in Parkhill
Saturday night, taking
advantage of a pair of
giveaways and connecting
on two screened shots; to
jump to a 4-0 lead after the
opening 20 minutes.
The Cents outplayed them
the rest of the way, with the
line of Steve Mclnally, Mark
Van Dooren and Aaron
Parsons netting three second -
period goals, but North
Middlesex never
relinquished their early
advantage.
Jay Baker scored his sixth
goal of the season for the
Centenaires in the third.
LANCERS DOMINATE
"Lackluster" sums up the
tCentenaires game Friday
night says coach Jason
Papple.
"Lambeth played a
disciplined game and won
every one-on-one battle.
"We have four or five guys
going 100 per cent every
night and the rest show up
once in a while," he says.
The Lancers led 1-0 after
the first. then dominated the
remainder of the game by
adding two powerplay and
one short-handed goals.
Mclnally, a plus 16 so far
this season in team plus-
minus calculations, spoiled
Lambeth's shutout bid when
he scored the Centenaires'
only goal on a breakaway in
the third.
Scott Van Dooren is
leading Seaforth's junior
squad in plus-minus at +19.
Mclnally is currently the
club's leading scorer, with 29
points in 18 games from 11
goals and 18. assists. Van
Dooren (Scott) is next with
12 goals and 14 assists for 26
points in 18 games, followed
by brother Mark Van Dooren
with six goals and 12 assists
for 18 points in 21 games.
The Centenaires have also
announced the return of
forward Shawn Walsh of
Stratford "to the fold."
Manager Dave Parsons
says Walsh wasn't going to
play hockey this season. He
was concentrating on a golf
scholarship offer in the
United States instead, but
has now changed his mind.
"Shawn's firepower has
been greatly missed this
season," Parson says. "He's a
competitor and he likes
Seaforth."
Decades of experience at many levels
Juniors hire Weber as associate coach
The local junior Centenaires have hired
well-known Seaforth-area hockey coach
13ill Weber as an associate to Jason Papple,
who was promoted to interim head coach
two weeks ago, alter firing Brian Nigro.
Weber, a retired teacher who lives in
Egmondville. is a systems and skills coach
with decades of experience who stresses
discipline. and has won at all levels of the
gaine, from mite through junior and in high
school hockey.
A press release from the Seaforth
Centenaires Junior "D"evelopment Hockey
Club says the general manager and
executive "were not happy with the current
direction" of the team. so have hired Weber
as an associate to Papple for the remainder
of the season, "to assist with the entire on
ice operations of the team." •
"I personally have heard nothing but
good things about Bill and his ability to
mold winners out of his hockey
knowledge," cents' manager dave Parsons
says.
"Something drastically needed to he done
now as we turn the corner into the playoffs.
"There is no reason why we shouldn't
turn this around."
New volunteer policy approved for schools
By Tint Cumming
A new policy on
volunteers in Perth and
Huron schools was approved
at an October meeting of the
Avon Maitland District
.School Board. The policy
encourages volunteer
programs and says the
Director of Education will
give guidelines to principals
when volunteer programs are
implemented.
Director of Education
Lorne Rachlis told the
meeting of the hoard that he
had been concerned over
liability issues concerning
volunteers and therefore
passed on the policy for
comment. it received
positive appraisal from those
who reviewed it, he said.
The school procedures
manual for volunteer
programs says volunteers can
help in duties such as field
trip helper. on fundraising
campaigns and providing
otic -on -one assistance to
students.
It also says the hoard's
intent is to "promote a safe
and secure school and
working environment for
students and staff."
Under the procedure.
school principals are
responsible for the
.recruitment, selection and
screening of volunteers.
• Each school will
designate a volunteer
coordinator
• The hoard's liability
insurance will cover a
volunteer doing their duties
for the board.
"This insurance protects a
volunteer who may he
named in a lawsuit arising
out of an injury, to a student."
the report says.
Volunteer applicants must
be interviewed by the
principal or school volunteer
coordinator, the policy says.
The amount of time spent
screening and training a
volunteer would he in
proportion to the extent of
the volunteer's
responsihilitics and the
degree of direct supervision
of the voluntccr, according to
the report.
"Volunteers who are non -
parent, but community
members, may require a
higher level of screening
which would require that thc
applicant provide a list of
three references which will
be checked by the principal,"
according to thc document.
"If it is necessary for a
voluntccr to have direct
contact with students under
low or no direct supervision
by the principal or another
staff member. - e.g., coaching
an athletic team, overnight
trips with students - the
applicant must provide a
recent Criminal Reference
Check at their own expense."
The policy procedure says
volunteers must •be aware of
health and safety issues,
legal liability, emergency
procedures such as fire drills
and reporting abuse
procedures. Principals must
also give them a statement
concerning confidentiality
issues and a statement of
disclosure of abuse by a
