Trailblazers say town route
up to council or businesses
BY GREGOR CAMPBELL

The Walton Trail Blazers
want little to do with an
official snowmobile route in
Seaforth.
Bob Leeming and Lois
Todds of the area club
attended 'the Nov. 10
meeting of Seaforth
Council. after being asked
for their input on .a
recommended new route
down West William Street.
"We tried to do it three
years ago. we don't need a
route. it's up to the town."
Leeming said.
He said last winter's light
snowfall meant nothing
went up last year and no
trail was staked. The Trail
Blazers have a new. route
north of Seaforth..'
Leeming said local
businesses or the town "can
take it .from there."
The old route down East
William Street is no longer
possible because of the new
subdivision being developed
north of the arena. •
Reeve Lin Steffler who
lives on the proposed West
William route said she
thought Main Street • North
would he more appropriate.
since it already has a high
volume of traffic. •
Coun. Mike Hak
disagreed. He felt there
wouldn't he as much snow
on that thoroughfare, and
snowmobilers would drive
more on sidewalks.
WON'T GO SLOW
All councillor agreed that
riders who require a trail
license probably aren't the
problem snowmobilers. who
drive where they want
because they ase -hgrb to..
identify and cater. •
uty=reeve Bill -ter,
said if council considers
controlling snowmobilers a
priority. it should send a
strongly worded letter to the
Ontario Provincial Police
indicating Seaforth wants its
bylaw enforced.
A 20 kmh speed limit for
snowmobiles in town was.
suggested.
"A lot of the new ones
won't go that slow." Works
Supenntendent John Forrest
said.
Council was informed that
if a new official route in and

Mayor Dave Scott said
council would lil,: to find a
balance between welcoming
snowmobilers and
addressing the concerns of
residents.
"KEEP IT SIMPLE"
Council decided if a route

complications.
It postponed further debate
and any decision, by putting
it on the Seaforth business
improvement association's

organization was to meet
later in the week.
If a trail in town is
developed. snowmobilers
would like to know where to
get food and fuel if coming
into town from a trail. the
Walton representatives told
council. Councillors agreed
a designated route means
more dollars for some
businesses.
"Keep it simple as
possible." Leeming advised.
