Centenaires replace rJ
Nigro with Papple
behind their bench
It was the best of
weekends.
It was the worst of
weekends.
Seaforth's Centenaires
fired head coach Brian Nigro
after an embarrassing 9-4
loss at Mitchell Friday, then
rebounded by earning three
of a possible four points on
the road against a pair of
tough opponents at Port
Stanley and Thamesford in
the OHA Junior
"D"evelopment League on
the weekend, under his
interim replacement Jason
Papple.
Saturday night the local
juniors came back from a 4-1
deficit after the first period,
to pick up a point in the
standings for a 6-5 overtime
loss against the Lakers at the
Port. The hometowners
scored with no time left on
the clock in the extra period.
Sunday night's victory in
their third game in three
nights against the West
(Yeck) Conference co -
leading Trojans was
particularly heartening.
The Centenaires won it 4-1
at Thamesford with two
defencemen out sick, and
without ace marksman Steve
McInally, not in the lineup
because of injury.
"If we never won another
game, but played the way we
did Sunday and most of
Saturday I wouldn't have a
problem with it," says former
assistant and new coach,
Papple.
"We had more discipline
and hustle than I've seen yet
this year. The guys showed a
lot of character this
weekend."
He called it "their finest
performance of the year."
BIG POWERPLAY
He also described Friday's
defeat against the Cents'
arch -rivals at Mitchell as
"their worst loss of the
season."
The Cents unveiled their
new uniforms in that game,
but didn't look so hot
coming off the ice after a
second period in which the
Hawks scored five
consecutive powerplay goals,
to win the game going away.
Papple was the head coach
of Seaforth's OMHA "CC"
champion midgets last
season.
Nigro, from Stratford, was
in his second season at the
Cents' helm. He made it to
within one game of the
Morcnz Division final last
season, before the defending
champion Seaforth juniors
were ousted by Exeter.
Seaforth's third-place record
fell to seven wins and 10
losses after last Friday
night's loss to Morenz-
leading Mitchell.
Centenaires' president Pete
Martene says Papple has
been named interim head
coach until the club's
executive meets to decide
what it is going to do.
Manager Dave Parsons
helped him behind the bench
Saturday and Sunday nights.

"It was a very difficult
decision based on Brian's
rapport with a great many of
the players but, although this
may be seen as a benefit in
coaching, it seemed to spell
his demise because he was
unable to push production
and garner respect from
others on the team,"
according to the statement
released by Parsons.
The hockey club is worried
about missing the playoffs.
"With the obvious parity in
the league this year there was
no time to wait, especially in
light of Friday's dreadful
exhibition against Mitchell."
Sunday night t at
Thamesford, Mark Van
Dooren and Adam Leonhardt
teamed up to give Seaforth
an early lead on the
powerplay, but the Trojans
tied it on a "had bounce"
near the end of the first
period.
BAKER NETS WINNER
The score remained knotted
at 1-1 until Jay Baker cashed
a pass from Jason Henderson
with what proved to be the
winner.
The Cents padded the final
score with a pair of empty -
netters at the end.
Saturday night at Port
Stanley, Brendan Rolph, J.D.
Nolan, Scott Van Dooren,
and Jon Chambers scored for
Seaforth, who fought back
from three goals down and
dominated the last two
periods of the game.
controlling play until seven
seconds were left in the extra
period.
Despite out -shooting their
hosts, the Centenaires found
themselves on the short end
of a 4-0 score at Mitchell
Friday until Clint Kerr put
them on the hoard late in the
first. McInally got another
one back for Seaforth five
minutes into the second,
before the Hawks went on
their powerplay binge and
blew them away. McInally
scored again in the third, and
Tim Sills got the other
Seaforth goal.
"It was frustrating for
everyone," Papple says.
"Even when we outplay the
other team, if they score first
we seem to lost our
momentum."
