Advisor calls
it official `drought' for some
While Huron and Perth
Counties weren't officially
declared a drought -afflicted
area like Bruce County was
this summer, a Ministry of
Agriculture and Rural
Affairs soil advisor says the
Seaforth area did experience
a drought this summer.
While it wasn't wide-
spread, Brian Hall said
conditions in Seaforth,
Brucefield, Bayfield, Blyth,
Belgrave, Gorrie and
Brussels were the worse in
Huron and Perth.
"It was a fairly narrow
area," he said.
Less than half the normal
rainfall fell in those areas.
And Hall said those areas
also received less rainfall
than was experienced in
1988, a season which
officially- experienced a
drought.
This summer and fall,
across the region farmers
were faced with varied
conditions where enough
rain to improve yields fell in
one area but literally a
couple concession roads
away remained dry.
While yields were not as
good as they could have
been, Hall said the varied
conditions saw some farmers
producing greater yields than
they had expected.
But in the worse areas,
with corn for example, Hall
said one farmer produced 20
bushels of corn per acre
when the average was about
100 bushels. A normal year
would produce about 130 to
140 bushels.
Both corn and soybeans
were generally disappointing
to farmers.
"The crop that
disappointed growers the
most was the soybeans," said
Hall.
A normal yield of
soybeans compared to corn.
would be 40 bushes of
soybeans to 120 bushels of
corn.
This year, he said soy
beans produced about 30

corn.
In some cases, he said
there were farmers
producing only 15 bushels of
soybeans.
Outside the drought arca,
farmers saw about 40
bushels, close to what
normally would have been
produced.
The whole season
developed about three weeks
ahead of time and remained
dry.
In the past month, when it
was time for fall tillage, Hall
said even that was more
difficult than it should have
been.
He said the dry soil was
hard on the equipment.
"You could see dust
following the plows down
the field. That is extremely
rare," he said.
But he said the dry
weather should leave the soil
structure in Netter shape for
the spring. Because it's not
