collection.
"I think the collection here is very important to the town of
Seaforth," he said.
The Sills family making it a donation to the town. is what
has allowed the Huron County Museum to become involved
in the project. If it had remained a private collection, the
museum would not have been able to offer its expertise to the
work that the committee must now do before the public can
even view some preliminary exhibits, possibly this summer.
"There's a great deal of work ahead of us," said Kale. "It's
going to take months. it all has to be catalogued and
cleaned."
Breede, director of the Huron County Museum. estimates
they moved about' 2,00(1 pieces into the town hall. Each of
those has to he catalogued in detail: a process which Breede
said takes an experienced person 20 minutes for each item
being catalogued. •
Every object has to he specifically identified under criteria
used by all museums. If a person has never seen the item
before. the professional name has to be found through
museum resources and a standard language is then used to
describe the item in a worksheet. Broad and specific classes
arc identified for the item. measurements arc taken. its
condition is described and it has to be' photographed before
being given a collection number.
Then it has to he inputted into a computer.
"Weneed help. We're just a small committee," said Kale.
They got there start about two years ago when lacae (local
architectural conservation advisory committee) learned at the
last minute that a collection of artifacts owned by AY
McLean, an historical figure of Seaforth, was about to he
auctioned.
Literally the night before the auction. lacacmembers found
out and. while some of the collection went to auction. lacac
reached the family in time and some of it was donated to the
town. , -
The committee realized there were lots of artifacts relating
to Seaforth in the 'community and also knew of the Sills
collection.
Thc'attic conditions over thc Silis's store were subjecting
that collection to extreme heat, and cold conditions during the
• year. Lacac wanted to find some way to preserve the artifacts
that were deteriorating'in those conditions.
A public meeting was held with about 50 people from the
community who were interested in protecting the town's
. history. From there. a committee torined to take up that cause
and eventually evolved into the Seaforth District Musuern
committeewhich recently won support from the town to
-locate a museum on the town hall's second floor.
Irwin Johnson. chair of the museum committee. said they
thought the museum woutd•hc a way for everyone to see the
Sills Collection. .•I •
At the same time. the committee is looking for other
artifacts it knows are buried in people's attics and basements,
as it hopes to build on the two collections it has already
brought together with some smaller, donations that have also
been made since starting out on the venture.
The committee hopes to have some eJthibits prepared tor
this summer as a preview. Possibly by fall. they would like to
have the museum ready but it will depend on the time it takes
for cataloguing.

of Education moved its offices in the Clinton high school.
"We're all here for one reason: to serve the needs of the
