everyone's help
Dear Editor:
• I would appreciate it if you.
could print the following
letter in your paper. In light
• of recent changes, brought
about by both our provincial
government and our school
boards. regarding the
education of our children. 1
wrote the following .letter
with my own commugity in
mind, but with the purpose
that it could he applied to
any. school or rural
community in Ontario. With
so many facts and figures
being released to -the public.
This issue can and has
become quite confusing and
perplexing. I feel we all have
• lost sight of the real issue,
the .children. They have
become lost in a sea of
numbers and square footage
on apiece of .paper. Rather
than at home safe nestled
and nurtured in the hearts of
their communities. -

isn't even posted as such.
We arc a community that
cares about one another. •
So why don') you care
about me? This brand new
building in the northeast
corner of your community.
Your donations gave your
children new playground
equipment. Your tax dollars
paid to renovate me. You
each have an investment in
me. You own part of me.
You walk through my doors
to attend school functions
and social functions. I've
welcomed you every time by
throwing my doors open
wide. and asked for nothing
in return. Now I am!
1 am the hub, the heart of
your community and you are
willing to throw me away
like yesterday's trash. Why'?
Why won't you help me!!

dying people and you won't
even try to save or revive

given you'?
If you lose me, say
goodbye to your community..
Open the door. Listen to the
noise, listen to the laughter
of the children. You'll lose

changed constantly - and they
will continue to do so as the
effort persists to make the
funding system workable.
In fact. this 'new' formula
is not really new at all.
Essentially, it contains the•
same key components as the
old system. it incorporates
only two major changes. The
total dollar amount is now
controlled in Queen's Park.
Secondly, there is a guarantee
for reduced funding for at
least the next two years for
AMDSB and similar public
boards.

change to 2000. Electronic
equipment may not be able to
read that date and could stop
operating.

AMDSB and other small
boards have been placed in a
financially untenable position.
They will be bankrupt before

With insolvency, the province
will eliminate local boards
entirely.. To suggest the
simplistic cost saving solution
of further reducing an already
decimated senior
administration is little more
than a•detractor to hide the
reality of this funding
travesty.
It is time to rally, behind
Chair Abby and her senior
administrative support as they
continue to fight to save
schools. More refinements

small schools and public
school • hoards not only
survive but resume to thrive
as public education in Ontario
enters the next century.
