Wish foundation
takes family
to Disney World
BY GREGOR CAMPBELL
Expositor Staff
The tales told around the
Nolan home in Seaforth are
wonderful these days.
Memories of their recent
adventure are many too, in
the midst of all the colourful
souvenirs they brought back
from when they met Mickey
and Minnie Mouse last
month.
On Oct. 8 a very large
white limousine came to the
Nolan's door at 175 Jarvis
Street, to whisk Eugene and
Barb and their three children
- Anthony, 9, Kaitlyn, 7, and
Kristen, 4 - away on a
expense -free, six-day
adventure centered around
Disney World in Orlando,
Florida, courtesy of the
southwestern Ontario branch
of the Make -A -Wish
Foundation.
Kaitlyn is a Grade 2
student at St. James School
who turns eight next June.
Shc has an acute form of
leukemia, and has been
undergoing chemotherapy
since the life-threatening
disease was first diagnosed
in September 1997.
NO SEATBELTS
The bridge at Port Huron.
"Splash Mountain" at Disney
World and not having to
wear seatbelts in the
limousine on thc way to
Detroit airport are what she
remembers hest of all about
her adventure that officially
ended Oct. 15.
She found it hard to get a
word in edgewise Sunday
afternoon as her equally
bubbly brother and sister
bounced around the living
room re -telling tales of their
favorite things on the recent
trip.
They both go to St. James
too.
They've all got hats. mouse
cars. the whole bit. Kaitlyn's
hat lights up, like a landing
strip at an airport.
Shc got autographs galore
too, with squiggles from
Pooh Bear, Tigger, Minnie,
Mickey, Goofy, Pluto, Snow
White, and many more.
"NO STRESS"
Kaitlyn got quite adept at
flashing her little "Give Kids
The World" button that
moved the Nolan clan to the
front of every line they came
too says her mom.
A WEEK TO REMEMBER - The Nolan family of Seaforth
spent an expense -free six days in Orlando, Florida
recently thanks to the Make A Wish Foundation. From left:
Kaitlyn, Barb, Kristen, with Anthony in front. Dad Eugene
was out capturing some cattle that had wandered when
this picture was taken Sunday.
CAMPBELL PHOTO
"There was no stress."
Barb says. "Every base was
covered. We got preferential
treatment."
The "Give Kids The World
Village" where the family
stayed was amazing. almost
a trip in itself, she says.
On 51 acres. it had
carousels, a swimming pool.
watcrpark and gingerbread
castle.
A break for thc whole
family.
She has nothing but praise
for everything that happened,
and everyone they met on the
holiday.
Days one through seven of
the Nolan's whirlwind
itinerary went like so: Magic
Kingdom, Wet n' Wild,
MGM, Seaworld, Animal
Kingdom, Mediaeval Times
dinner theatre, home.
The Nolan's wondered if •
they should call the paper to
get a picture when the
limousine first came to pick
them up. The Make -A -Wish
people didn't want the'
publicity.
And their family pictures
turned out fine. They've got
albums full of memories.
Now if everything goes as
hoped, scheduled and prayed
for, Aug. 15. 1999 looms
large on the Nolan's
calendar.
It has been officially
circled and dubbed "No
More Chemo Day" for
Kaitlyn.
Snowmobile route under debate
BY GREGOR CAMPBELL
Expositor Staff
Scaforth Council "accepted
in principal" hut voted down a
recommendation for a new
snowmobile mutt into town at
its Oct. 27 meeting.
Councillors thcn invited a
representative of thc Walton
snowmobile club "up for a
face to facc" at a futurc
meeting.
"I have problems with
snowmobiles in town," Coun.
Mike Hodgins said. adding he
has had a young relative killed
by one.
He said he has no problems
with some snowmobilers, hut
its unfortunate a few bad
apples can spoil it for others.
Coun. Lin Steffler said she
was more in favour of the
route than against it, but
wanted to make sure everyone
was on the same wavelength
about snowmobiles in town so
ensure Seaforth could pull the
plug on them if any
arrangement didn't work out.
"What about the residents,
have they been appmachcd?"
she asked
The Stefflers live on West
William Street. a main leg of
the new route proposed by the
Walton Trail Blazers, and the
councillor said many children
live there.
RECOMMENDATION
"They (snowmobiles) arc
going to come in anyway,"
deputy -reeve Bill Tcall said
after Coun. Steffler's
reservations.
Clerk/treasurer Jack
McLachlan reported to
council that he and Public
Works superintendent John
Forrest had already met with
Bob Lccming of the arca
snowmobiling club.
"Bob made a
recommendation for a route to
town across the creek at the
end of Duke Street. then up
West William to Goderich
Street, or across the PUC
property and Jack McLlwain
property to Welsh Street,"
McLachlan said.
If council agreed to thc
route. he said he would
contact merchants in the arca
to determine if they would
provide signs on the ttail.
The old trail. set up several
years ago. remained relatively
quite with last winter's light
snowfall.
It entered Scaforth from
north cast of the arcna and
wcnt down East William and
Victoria Streets. Complaints
were periodically raised,
mainly to the Seaforth Police
Services Board, about noise,
snowmobiles driving across
private property, late night
operation, excessive speed
and snowmobilers not paying
attention to the four-way stop
at East William and Franklin
Streets.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS
That previous route is now
impossible because of the new
subdivision since developed
in that part of town. Moving
thc snowmobile trail about a
block cast won't work now
either, because of the recent
establishment of a memory
gardens by thc town to the
south of the high school.
Council agreed once
snowmobilers got to Goderich
Street they would need a route
out, and a temptation might be
to drive elsewhere in town.
Clerk/treasurer McLachlan
said thc Walton club wasn't
asking for a link to other
groomed trails outside of
town, just a way in for food
and fuel.
Coun. Michael Hak said thc
big problem is enforcing
snowmobiling rules in town
because their drivers can be
difficult to idcntify and catch.
Council noted that members
of the Walton snowmobile
club might not he thc culprits
that have caused problems in
the past.
