Healthy bene
You can gain significant
health benefits by building
physical activity into your
daily routine and you'don't
have to "sweat it" to reap the
rewards.
The new Physical Activity
Guide to Health/Active
Living was recently released
by Health Canada and pro-
vides residents of Huron
County with clear guidelines
on how to achieve better
health by making physical
activity an important part of
daily living. It provides solu-
tions to physical inactivity,
which caused 25 per cent of
all deaths due to heart disease
in 1993.
The new guide is aimed at
helping inactive and less
active people to take steps
towards a more active,
healthy lifestyle. Two out of
every three Canadians are
risking their health and quali-
ty of life by not being active
enough.
The guide suggests that
physical activity doesn't have
to be strenuous to improve
your health. You can improve
your fitness and your heart by
doing light activity for 10
minute periods and add thcm
up for an hour's worth of
activity each day.
' Activities such as walking
to the store, stretching and
playing catch with your chil-
dren are all good ways to stay
healthy and become more
physically active at home, at
work and during your leisure
time. If you're already doing
some light activity, you can
move up to more moderate
the evening will be Neil and

Good wishes of the club go
out to Erich and Joyce
Matzold who are holidaying
in Australia. Also get well
wishes to Genie Driscoll who
has been confined to Scaforth
Community Hospital.

fits to activity
activities Tike brisk walking,
raking leaves, dancing and
aerobics. As your progress to
moderate activities, you can
cut down to 30 minutes, 4
days a week. A little activity
is good but more is even bet-
ter, if you want to achieve
health benefits.
There are many ways to be
active in your community.
For example, you can take
advantage of free public skat-
ing in Scaforth, Wingham,
Exeter and Goderich, which
is sponsored by local busi-
nesses and service groups.
Call your local recreation
department for dates and
times, and to learn more
about resources and activities
in your area. Special events
are organized throughout the
year to give everyone an
opportunity to be active.
The Jingle Bell Walk,
which originated .: in
Community Active Living
Lambton, is an active living
event for the whole commu-
nity. It's an invigorating win-
ter walk through town, while
wearing jingle bells and
singing Christmas songs.
Jingle Bell Walks arc being
organized by local communi-
ty groups and/or recreation
departments this year. One
will be held in Scaforth on
Nov. 22.

new Physical Activity Guide
or for more information on
active community events, call

ment or Healthy Lifestyles

Unit at 482-3416 or 1-800-
