JIM MACLEODt
Ludwig walks on to CIAU varsity basketball team
BY GREGOR CAMPBELL
Expositor Stall
He's got smarts and still has
a sweet jump shot that he can
swish with regularity from a
long way out.
So Golden Bears' basket-
ball grad Sean Ludwig of
Scaforth has made one of the
top Canadian university
men's trams, as a freshman
walk-on.
Sudbury's Laurentian
University team was ranked
number two in the nation last
year, and made it to the
Canadian Intercollegiate
Athletic Union's (CIAO)
"Final Four."
Twenty-two would -he
Voyageurs tried out fur this
season's squad, says
Laurentian basketball coach
Peter Campbell, who went
down from 14 players to his
final 12 a couple of weeks
ago.
Three of this dozen are
rookies. and only Scan is a
walk-on. The other two were
invited to training camp.
Ludwig, 18, is the son of
Janet and the late Doug
Ludwig. He is also a "Dean's
Student" at Laurentian. This
means he gets a full academic
scholarship. every year, as
long as he keeps his average
up to 80.
"It's a big jump from single
A (OFSSA) to a CIAU ' irsi-
ty, says the Sudbury baskct-
haJl coach.
Campbell knew about
Ludwig hut h'ad never seen
him before he 'walked -on the

court at this pre -season's
Voyageurs open try -outs.
The -coach says he's been
using Scan as a shooting. off -
guard and decided to keep
hint because of his work
ethic. he's got the big jumper.
he picks things up quick, and
he has showh the ability to
adjust to a new. system.
FAST -BREAK SQUAD
"He knows he's got to get
stronger physically. and learn
how to relax. the way he docs
i in practice when he's in a
game." coach Campbell says.
"So much is different,"
Sean says. "We run a fast -
break offence, which we
couldn't do at Scaforth
because we only had seven
players.
"Here the level of playing is
amazing."
He has been averaging
about 10 minutes a game in
pre -season, an adjustment in
itself, because he usually
played the whole game, every
game, for the senior Golden
Bears last season, where he
many times scored 50+
points a game last spring
from the backcourt aid
meanwhile continued as an
honours student.

Sean says so far he's keep-
ing his marks at 80 and uni-
versity basketball is taking
him places he's never been
before; Montreal, for
instance, where the
Voyageurs went on a road
trip to take on Concordia a
couple of weeks ago.
"It's like a full-time job,"
Sean says, "but it doesn't feel
like it because you're doing
something you love."
The team practices for one
to two hours from Monday to
Thursday. Then there's
games on top of that.
University is a whole new
hall game toe►.
AN SDHS FIRST
Ludwig says "the indepen-
dence" is the biggest differ-
ence he's noticed from high
school.
"You're on your own and
classroom learning is mini-
mal."
Terry Johnson, long-time
basketball coach at SDHS,
says Sean is the first former
Golden boy Bear to make a
CIAU team that he can think
of, other than Dave Murray
in soccer. A few have played
college hoops south of the
border.
Some of SDHS's Golden
girls have graduated onto
CIAU courts in the past
though, basketballer Mary
Thompson, for instance, sev-
eral years ago.
Scan and the Voyageurs'
varsity basketball team are on
the road to this ncck of the
woods this week. Laurentian
is playing the University of
Guelph in an exhibition game
for the United Way in the
new arena at Woodstock
tomorrow (Thursday) at 7:30
p.m.
Landfill lifespan
seven to 15 years
The remaining volume at
the Mid -Huron Landfill Site
is approximately 400,000
cubic metres, the board was
told at its most recent meet-
ing. Burnside Environmental
Limited reported the site's
capacity has a life span of
seven to 15 years.
The board carried a motion
"that no expansions changing
capacity at the landfill site
occur; and that Burnside
Environmental be authorized
to do a survey to maximize
the volume within the exist-
ing certificate."
Halloween night
busy in Brussels
Neighbours awoke to find
dummies on fire on the front
porch of a house on Ellen
Street in Brussels, at about 2
a.m. the morning after
Halloween.
The fire caused an estimat-
ed $4,000 damage "due to a
chair, ghetto blaster and alu-
minum siding being partially
melted by the extreme heat."
accofding to OPP.
Three cars parked on
Turnberry and Ellen Streets
had windows smashed "with
a blunt object" on Halloween.
