So Golden Bears' basket- ball grad Sean Ludwig of Scaforth has made one of the top Canadian university men's trams, as a freshman walk-on. Sudbury's Laurentian University team was ranked number two in the nation last year, and made it to the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union's (CIAO) "Final Four." Twenty-two would -he Voyageurs tried out fur this season's squad, says Laurentian basketball coach Peter Campbell, who went down from 14 players to his final 12 a couple of weeks ago. Three of this dozen are rookies. and only Scan is a walk-on. The other two were invited to training camp. Ludwig, 18, is the son of Janet and the late Doug Ludwig. He is also a "Dean's Student" at Laurentian. This means he gets a full academic scholarship. every year, as long as he keeps his average up to 80. "It's a big jump from single A (OFSSA) to a CIAU ' irsi- ty, says the Sudbury baskct- haJl coach. Campbell knew about Ludwig hut h'ad never seen him before he 'walked -on the SEAN LUDWIG - VOYAGEUR in action for the senior Golden Bears last spring. court at this pre -season's Voyageurs open try -outs. The -coach says he's been using Scan as a shooting. off - guard and decided to keep hint because of his work ethic. he's got the big jumper. he picks things up quick, and he has showh the ability to adjust to a new. system. FAST -BREAK SQUAD "He knows he's got to get stronger physically. and learn how to relax. the way he docs i in practice when he's in a game." coach Campbell says. "So much is different," Sean says. "We run a fast - break offence, which we couldn't do at Scaforth because we only had seven players. "Here the level of playing is amazing." He has been averaging about 10 minutes a game in pre -season, an adjustment in itself, because he usually played the whole game, every game, for the senior Golden Bears last season, where he many times scored 50+ points a game last spring from the backcourt aid meanwhile continued as an honours student.
