Council decided .to
approach Paul Menary to see
if he is still interested in
becoming involved in
municipal politics. The last
time it had a vacancy, when
Coun. John Ball resigned
before moving from town
earlier this year, Menary
sought the position but Coun.
Mike Hodgins was appointed

University
applications
coming due
This time of year always
causes anxiety in the lives of
graduating students. October
and November marks the
deadline date for university
and college applications.
Students are faced with the
pressures of choosing their
future. In two short months
students must make
important decisions that will
affect the rest of their lives.
At the ages of eighteen and
ninetcen,many students are
not prepared to make these
decisions. Universities and
colleges are aware of this
problem and have produced a
program that helps students
to make informed choices.
Graduating students take
many interest questionnaires
that arc designed to give
students direction and
information. Post secondary
school also provides school
drop -ins when a
spokesperson informs the
student of available
programs. Videos, pamphlets
and portfolios arc made
available to provide
information as well.
It is a challenging time for
graduating students but with
the help and support of
parents, teachers, guidance
counsellors and university
information sessions students
should find this important
time of decision making
made easier.

before becoming its secretary
prior to announcing her
candidacy for council last
year. She will remain the
town's representative on the

She sat on the hospital
board for three years before
becoming the town's rep

year. -

appeared in evening dresses
and then in bathing suits.
"Miss Boots Beater" alias
Rick Fortune was declared
"Miss Zone CI 1998".
Seaforth certainly has a lot
of talented people who were
restructuring, says Lin
enjoyed by all present.
A short interval was had
while Frank Phillips and his
team constructed a small
cenotaph on the stage. The
colours were marched on by
Sgt. at Arms Gordon
DeJong with Mary Becker
and Judy Poland.
Wreaths were laid by Jack
Eisler, June Pyette and
Linda Gridzak and Velma
Young and Mary Doig.
A delicious dinner was
prepared by the Ladies

her committee and served
by the young gentlemen
members of the branch.

council, but former reeve
Ferguson was also council's
representative on the fire
hoard.
Steffler lives on West
William Street and is
manager of transportation for
the Huron -Perth Catholic
District School Board. She is
originally from the Brussels
area, later moved out of,
Huron, but the Steffler's
returned to the county when
,they moved to walton in
'1969. They came to Seaforth
in 1988.
There is only one other
woman representing the 26
municipalities oh Huron
County's current council.
"That's good news, Steffler
says. "Sometimes being a
woman gives you a different
perspective on issues."
Clinton's veteran Reeve
Carol Mitchell is the other
woman on county council.
Restructuring is one of the
more prominent issues, facing
the county and member
municipalities recently.
"I think it's. a good idea,"
Steffler said Thursday
afternoon.
"The sooner we get down
to brass tacks the better." ,
Heritage club views Sills' collection
On Oct. 19 the 4-11
"Heritage Club" met at Sills
Hardware in Seaforth at 7
p.m. to view the heritage
collection on the third floor.
Jim Sills guided us through
the tour. He pointed out
writing on the walls, while
going up the stairs, of
different individuals from
recent to many years ago.
Once we were on third floor,
Jim told us that the heritage
items have hecn collected
over the past number of
years starting in 1955.
because space was available
here. Some items that were
seen were a 100 -year-old
cradle carved from logs.
pictures from many past

and torches that were used
as early flashlights. Jim
handed out a booklet from
the 1995 Seaforth
Homecoming to each 4-11
