Dear Editor;
What do Seoul Korea and
Seaforth, Ontario have in
common? They both are
hosting Christopher
Leadership Courses. Last
week (Oct. 16-18) as area
chairperson I travelled to
Edmonton to attend the
annual general meeting of the
Lumen Institute; the
governing body of the
Christopher course, that
teaches effective
communicating skills, and
speaking techniques and
confidence building.
At the meeting, a
Letters
•
presentation was made by
Kim Rong Soo from Seoul
Korea, a person whose
business is motivational
speaking and confidence
building. With the downturn
in the Asian economy, a need
developed to create a source
of positive thinking and to
build people's confidence.
While surfing the net, he
clicked on "confidence" and
something in common
found the Christopher
Leadership Course of
Canada. In July a team of
Koreans came to Canada to
be instructed in the course
and they now are presenting
the course in Seoul to 100
people. Just like Seaforth -
for there is a course running
right now at Northside United
Church, instructing 26
people. At the meeting in
Edmonton reports were given
from all the centres across
Canada from St. Johns to
Vancouver Island, with the
course being offered in 28
different places. This being
an unusual course to be found
in a small rural community, it
is a real opportunity to
develop positive thinking and
speaking techniques. For
those interested in joining
another 11 week course
starting in January contact
area chairperson Tom Melady
at 345-2152. You too can be
part of that international
organization that teaches how
to overcome nervousness and
become a confident, effective
communicator.
Sincerely,
Tom Melady
MPP wants trustees to pay attention to two issues
The following is a press release from Huron MPP
Helen Johns, received on Monday:
***
Helen Johns, MPP for Huron County has requested time at
the Avon Maitland District School Boards' October 27
meeting and has been granted five minutes.
Mrs. Johns wishes to bring to the attention of the Trustees
two issues.
I. Mrs. Johns has a letter from the Minister of Education
which outlines the funds that will be received by the Board. It
states that the Avon Maitland Board will have more funds
available to them, as a result of the funding formula. The
letter also states clearly that the Ministry of Education has not
mandated school closures and that any Board that has excess
capacity and chooses not to do anything by Dec. 31 will not
be eligible for new school grants but will in no way be
penalized in any other grant allocations. Once again I make
the offer that if the Trustees have questions 1 would be happy
to organize a financial review where parents, Trustees, MPPs,
the Ministry of Education and the Board administration
participate.
2. As a result of concerns expressed by Trustees Mrs. Johns
Council

Council approved
extending its agreement
with the Seaforth and
District Food Bank for the
space they occupy in Town
Hall until Dec. 31, 1999 at
its Oct. 22 meeting.
On Oct. 22 Seaforth
Council passed a motion
agreeing that the owners of
IQ Huron Road in
Harpurhey can hook into
the town water supply, if
they arc also responsible for
all hook-up charges.
Council also approved the
owtrers' request that shd151'd"'
anyone along this line wish
to hook on to it, they be
required to reimburse these
owners a percentage for
each hook up.

Seaforth Council passed a
bylaw authorizing the
execution of a site plan
agreement between the
town and Doug Elliott at its
Sept. 22 meeting, for the
now vacant Main Street
property burned -out two
years ago.
Children with
few food facts
FROM Page 4
Perth County are primarily
rural areas that have a high
degree of agricultural
production hut, it has come to
our attention that the children
have very little knowledge of
how their food is actually
grown.
They also arc not aware of
the correct methods to use
when planting and
maintaining a garden. The
tendency is to throw
chemicals on the yard year
after year. The intention is to
correct this with hands-on
instruction and practical
experience.
And additional objective of
the project is more closely
related to Health Canada's
objective of reducing hunger
in school children. The
knowledge that they can grow
food will encourage backyard
production at home and any
surplus from the schools will
be donated to the eight area
food hanks.
Many related groups in the
arca arc also available to
provide assistance such as the
Huron County Health Unit,
Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture, Food an d Rural
Affairs, Community Food
Advisors, Huron Community
Garden, Goderich
Horticultural Society, Huron
Pcrth Separate School Board
and Avon Maitland District
School Board.
Additional grant
applications have been
submitted to organizations
that providing funding to
environmentally related
projects.
has also received a letter from Drew Nameth, Director,
Capital and Operating Grants, Administration Branch,
Ministry of Education that states that he understands that the
Trustees are concerned that there is a "remote possibility that
the enrolment trend might reverse and that in the future there
might be a need for new pupil places," he states that "I can
assure you that in the event of high growth that would
increase the enrolment over the capacity in the Avon -
Maitland District School Board, the Ministry of Education
and Training's funding model would address the issue of new
pupil places. Unless the board chooses, there•is no
requirement for the Avon -Maitland Board to produce a list of
schools to be closed by December 31, 1998." I have met with
the Trustees and have discussed this letter with them.
Alt documentation will be presented on Oct. 27 and will be
available after the meeting and at my constituency office.
After reviewing the information that I am providing at the
Board meeting I am optimistic that the Trustees will take time
to consider the options available to them and develop a new
motion that gives parents, students and elected officials an
opportunity to become involved in the process and the issues
that will give our children a quality education.
LEANING SILO NEARANAt TON a This silo'of CHt;trli6 Te'rpstrd's at RR 3 Walton Was the''
talk of the hamlet, and full of grain when it started leaning precariously over a barn full of
hundreds of pigs two weekends ago. Workmen managed to empty it but it still had a
serious lean to it when Expositor editor Scots Hilgendorf took this picture last Thursday.
Leaning silos like this are a relatively rare sight in rural Ontario.
