He said the new manager of the railway went on a lengthy business trip to Texas immediately after the Sept. 28 derailment. hut in brief • conversations before -he left , the manager sounded willing to pursue the idea of an emergency crossing with the town when he gets hack in a couple of weeks. The Main Street South crossing is•the only way fire and emergency vehicles can get across the railway tracks in Seaforth. other than by going well out of their way along concession roads in . adjacent Tuckersmith • Township. Seaforth Fire Chief George Garrick called the situation worri'somc earlier this year. and • said the situation -of Seaforth with only one crossing was unique as tar as he knows in Huron County. CHEAP IN LONG RUN Last month's multi -car derailment occurred near this level crossing. The potential for problems at the tracks has been pointed out by the Seaforth fire department in the past, but the railroad said the odds of something happening that would block the street were slim, and wasn't interested in the idea. The town didn't pursue it primarily because the. estimated cost of establishing an official second crossing was estimated at more than $250,000, all of it the municipality's responsibility. Works superintendent John Forrest said all the derailment cost the town was two loads of gravel,_ but it might prove cheap in the long run. All that might be needed to set up an emergency crossing might be that gravel, a chained gate, and a quick means of opening it in an emergency, McLachlan said.
