Thcrc were about 1.320
participants. from 38 separate
• elementary schools in Huron
and Perth -rounds.. as well as
Perth public schools.
Patrick loved to run.
• The 17 -year-old from
Dublin died at home from a
heart ailment in ..1991 after
running at St. Michael •
Thc.school's annual cross
counts. considcred'a tune up
for the Huron -Penh races the
following week. was subse-
-quently re -named in his
memory.
The "Cook Memorial has
grown by many little strides
upon stride. and has evolved
into a unique event with
nifty wrinkles to promote
sportsmanship and the simple
,joys of competition.
Most of the school and staff
arc involved:
Everybody finishes.
because of "turtles".'They
know just where to run by
staying close on the heels of
"rabbits" in all the races.
These arc St. Michael stu-
dents. The turtles run with
stragglers. and keep their
spirits up with encouraging
words, no matter •how far
alone at thc hack of the pack
they may bc. The rabbits run
slightly ahead of the herds to
make sure nobody runs off
course.
There arc a dozen races in
the afternoon. ‘snh distances
depending on age. from
7(N)m to 2700m. Thcy finish
into a make -shift chute on the
track by the school. where
Collision kills
Brussels pian
A 77 -year-old Brussels man
died after a -two -vehicle colli-
sion. in that village Sunday
morning.
Ontario Provincial Police
'say Bruce McCall failed to
stop for a stop sign. then was
struck broadside by a pickup
truck at the intersection of
Turnberry and Mill Streets at
about 9:25 a.m.
McCall's vehicle struck a
• building after the collission.
He was rushed by ambulance
to Wingham hospital in criti-
cal Condition, and transferred
to London. where he died at
2:27 p.m.

Wingham.

Runners from St. Jamcs
School in Scaforth were once
again in the thick Of things at
this year's "Cook Memorial."
Fifty-one of them raced. Two
were runners-up in their
races. and overall the school
chalked up .10 finishes in thc
top -10.
St. Jamcs' .girls were the
quickest.
Lindsay Nash was second
in a field 92 runners in thc
nine -and -under girls' 700m
race, and•Krista Vcncernc
also crossed thc line second
of 94 runners in thc girls' I0-
and-under700ni.-
- Nicole Kistner was fourth
and Mary Finlayson seventh
in the 13 -and -over girls'
1800m race.
Brad Henderson was fifth
for 1 1 and 12-ycar-old•hoys.
Lorenz Gutcnsperger was
sixth in the nine -year -old -
boy's run.
Eighth -place finishes were
achieved by Kristen Flanagan
for nine-year-old girls,
Rosanna Grohhink. for I I
and 12 girls, and Korey Nash
in thc I3 -and -over boy's race.
Adrian Gutensperger was
ninth far 13 -and -over boys.
