The Huron Expositor, 1998-10-14, Page 5(\Rx Central Keating's Pharmacy Fascinated by politician's honest, rugged face FROM Page 4 away in Europe." He looked away from us, his head bowed slightly and he seemed to stare at the floor, and in the same almost whispered tone he added, "1 found out later from her doctor that she had died at noon oi' Sunday - at exactly the tam vas in Holland placing Mowers on her L.1 • e." bo b: .pus time all the young women in the audience were trying to control their running mascara... and the young men had their handkerchiefs out pretending to wipe their runny noses. The minister's moving story took only a few minutes. Leaving lots of time for him to tell us of the glories of the government of George Drew and of all the great things it was doing for the people of Ontario... and a couple of hundred young men and women were on the edge of their seats, still captives of the sentiment and passion of his words - soaking in the message about the great future the province will have under a Tory government.... and believing every word. His story telling style was something between the sharpness of Benjamin Disraeli and the homespun manner of Samuel Clemens. He cou J squeeze feeling and spirit and soul from every word and phrase. Like all the rest, 1 was deeply moved by the message of this man... the man most Ontarians knew as "Old Man Ontario", Col. Thomas L. Kennedy. A few years later in the early 1950's. i attended another meeting where the former minister and premier was to speak. i was with Hugh Latimer - the legendary Tory organizer whose credits include winning 21 by- elections in -a row and three General elections for Premier Frost.... and like Mr. Kennedy, -Latimer's father ran a country store in a rural area of Ontario. Bingo isn't onl Dear Editor: Do you know what the residents in your community nursing and retirement homes are doing'? October 11-17 is "Activity Professionals Awareness Week" in Ontario. All across the province, activity professionals in health care settings are raising community awareness of the services being offered tb help' enrich our residents lives. Yes - they"re playing bingo but they're also attending weekly church services, something many of them were unable to do at home. They're being treated,to concerts by our community's finest talent. Thoy're dancing to the many local old tymc music hands, keeping time to the tunes of a fiddle player or enjoying music by a classical pianist. They're going for outings to community fairs and events, shopping and sight-seeing at a city mall and even taking in a game of mini golf. They're enjoying performances on our front lawn by a local pipe band or taking a horse and buggy ride around our front circle drive. The residents adopted a Boston bulldog named "Connie" who visits every week to climb up on their laps. Some arc baking and doing crafts or even enjoying a beer at a pub night featuring live entertainment by a wcil known local doctor. Residents admitted to our home arc assessed for what abilities they have retained rather than the ones they have lost. 'Our impressive restorative care program has residents learning to walk again after a broken hip. learning to regain . their independence after suffering a stroke and rebuilding strength through daily exercise and therapy programs, convalescing to the point where "going home again" becomes a reality. They're Iearnin'g new songs with the local nursery school children and teaching the children some of their old favorites. Whcn he returned to Scotland he was persuaded to publish his notes and observations in a book in Gaelic, the language understood by his fellow highlanders. So I said to Hugh, "Do you think you could get Mr. Kennedy to tell that same story he told us a few years ago in Gravenhurst?" "You know, the one about the old lady in Caledon East aif, lpting the little boy?" I was surprised when Hugh said, "I don't think he will, for he won't remember it." I just couldn't believe this for it was the kind of story and story teller I knew I could never forget... soon I was sorry I ever mentioned it. Hugh grinned and said, "He can't tell that story because it never really happened. He made it all up - he is a great story teller." Hugh walked away laughing... as if he told me something I should have known. In 1960 I began to understand Tom Kennedy. He had died a year earlier - forty years after he first became the tnember of the Legislature for the Riding of y activity at Seaforth Manor Letters holidays with special events and meals and learning about countries and cultures throughout the World. There were a few lines in a book on the life of Kennedy written in 1960 by Ralph Hyman. Ralph had been a Queens Park reported for th„ Globe and Mail in the 1'ijU's. The small hard covered book was published by the Globe and Mail. Ralph wrote, quoting Mr. Kennedy, "We believed in Santa Clause far longer than children do today.
