Many owners never claim lost bikes,
several given to charities after 90 days
BY SCOTT HILGENDORFF
Expositor Editor
' A lot of Seaforth bicycles
are being donated to charity
without their owners
knowing it.
"We get a lot of them
found but nobody's
reporting them stolen." said
Seaforth Constable Art
Burt.
He finds it hard to believe
that people don't contact
the OPP to• report missing
bikes when many of them
arc worth more than 5300
and are found undamaged.
Burt said most often.
someone sees a hike that
isn't locked and rides it
from that place to wherever
he or she is going and then
leaves it somewhere along
the way.
Someone else finds it and
takes the lost bike to the
police.
When Burt came here.
there were about 10 bikes in
the property garage at the
Seaforth OPP office. Right
now. there are three.
They are held for 90 days
before being given to local
charities.
He, said there isn't one
maiplace where stolen
bikes get left and that it
isn't just one or two people
stealing hikes to resell
them.
Most often. they are just
taken because it's
convenient. •
"The odd time. you might
get a calf about finding one
in the bottom of a river and
it might he a little rust,"
Burt said. But most often,
the bike's don't even' need
minor repairs when they arc
recovered.
When bikes are reported
stolen. the biggest problem
Burt said they have in
recovering them is that the
person doesn't know the
serial number off the bike.
That piece of information
is vital in the OPP system
for the bike to even be
listed as stolen and

Seaforth and District Optimist Club
increased the odds of it
being recovered.
Otherwise. Burt said.
"It's like not knowing your
licence plate number."
To prevent a theft in the
first place. Community
•Services Officer Don
Shropshall said. "The
higgest.thing is they should
have some kind of bicycle
lock." •
When locking the•hike.
Shropshall recommends the
person Lock it around the
frame of the bike and not a
tire:
With the high value of the
hikes. a thief will take off
the tire and leave it locked
to the pole or bike rack,
taking the rest of the bike.
Shrupshall also stressed
the importance of knowing
the serial number of the
hike and other specific
details.
"Often. people have no
idea what kind of bike they
have." he said.
The make, model. serial
number and identifying
marks should all be
recorded and available to
police when reporting a
stolen bike.
Shropshall said to keep
bikes out of sight when
they're at home. Instead of
leaving them on a porch or
at the side of a house, he
said keep it locking inside a
garage or shed.
"Don't give the
opportunity for it to be
stolen," he said.
There are currently three
bikes that have not been
claimed from Seaforth OPP.
The 90 -day hold on a
blue -coloured Vagabond
Thunder Trail expires on
Oct. 11.
The owner of a silver, M
Trax has until Nov. 2 to
identify it and the owner of
a black, Barletta has until
Nov. 9.
