Today's students are tomorrow's leaders. But
to guarantee a bright future, they need greater
access to education. They also need the job
search skills that will help them reach their
goals. To make sure that young people have
what they need to succeed, the following
programs and services are available.
More Affordable Financing
for Post -Secondary Education
Helping Students Cope With Rising Costs:
• new Canada Study Grant for students with
dependants
• for part-time students, a new deduction for
child care expenses and the ability to claim
the education tax credit
• Canada Millennium Scholarships to more
than 100,000 students a year, over 10 years,
beginning in 2000
Helping Individuals Repay Student Loans:
• new tax credit for interest paid on
student loans'
• improvements to the interest relief plan
to help students repay their loans, and
extension of interest relief over a longer
period of time
• possible reduction in Canada Student Loan
principal for those in serious financial
difficulty
The Youth Information Initiative
This service provides young people with job
market information so they can make decisions
about their education and careers. Information
is available through a Web site, a toll-free
information line, local information exhibits,
Youth Link, a directory of Government of
Canada programs for youths, and seminars
and conferences held in communities
throughout Canada.
SchoolNet
Canada's=SthoolNet helps connect the
country's 16,500 schools, 3,400 public
libraries, and 460 First Nations schools to
the information highway. It links over 1,000
national and international educational services
and resources. This enables educators and
learners to develop the skills needed in the
global economy.
