Ejections cause forfeit
Dukes oust Reds
BY MATT SHURRIE
SSP News Staff
It certainly wasn't the way
the Goderich Dukes expected
the playoff to finish, but as
the old saying goes, a win is
a win, and they'll take it.
The Dukes advanced to the
Huron County fastball
League finals against the
defending -champion Brussels
Tigers, by beating Seaforth's
Reds by forfeit in the rubber
game of their hest -of -five
semi-final at Gliderich last
Wednesday night.
They were leading 5-0 in
the fourth inning'when the
things got unusual.
Tempers flared and the
umpires ended up deciding
the game and series. -
After Reds' centerfielder
Darren Akey singled,
Scaforth's Jim Roth hit a
• grounder to Dukes' second
baseman Steve Hewitt. The
hall was fielded cInnly and
he tagged Akey, w. o was on
his way to second. As Hewitt
attempted to throw to first,
Akcy put his arms up and
pushed Hewitt, who's throw

with two losses
Seaforth's Centcnaires got
off: on the wrong foot the first
weekend of their Ontario
Hockey Association Junior-
"D"evelopment League regu-
lar schedule.
They lost both starts - 2-0
to North Middlesex Stars in
their home opener Friday
night. and 7=2 on the road at
Thamesford Trojans Sunday.
Friday night was a goal -
tender's duel, with the'Stars
goalie "Standing on. his
head;" according to Cents'
manager Dave Parsons, out -
dueling Scaforth veteran
Scott Wood ih front of a
healthy crowd of about 225
fans.
Sunday night. the Trojans
were full measure for the
win, out -shooting the
Centenaires 44-22, including
il3>,l () in the opening 20 min -
But it remained 0-(} after
the first period, thanks to the
outstanding play of Seaforth
goaltender Chuck Robertson'
Thamcsford wok a 5-1 lead
after the second period.
Mike Murray opened the
scoring for Seaforth, and,
Scott Van Doorcn popped
Scaforth's second goal.
The Cents play Exeter in
Hcnsall Friday night and host
the Belmont Bombers the fol-
lowing evening. Both games

went wide of the mark at
first.
Base umpire Chuck Turner
signalled that Akey was out,
but apparently did not see the
push. Home plate umpire Jim
Harrison witnessed the play
and called both runners out
due to interference.
Akey objected to the call
and had words with Harrison
who re-enacted the play to
support his call. Akey walked
off the field but returned
moments later and was eject-
ed. Then his brother Dave
Akey got into the act in sup-
port of his club's case. After
words that can't be repeated,
he was also tossed from the
tilt.
