Men's Invitational
Selvey edges Dougan
'Paul Selvey of Milverton
fired a five -under -par 66 to
top a field of 160 and win the
Seaforth Golf and Country
Club's 27th annual Men's
Invitational tournament satur-
day.
Selvey, a member of the
SG&CC, nipped Gord
Dougan by one shot to earn
low gross honours on the par -
71 local course.
. Defending champion
Dennis Nielsen finished at
par, and Brad Walsh was the
next lowest Seaforth golfer,
carding a 72.
Low net at 65 was Greg
Preszcator, formerly of
Seaforth but now living in
Stratford.
It has become a tradition for
a contingent of golfers. fmm
Bermuda to make the trip to.
Seaforth for this tournament
every year. David Gihhings
was low -Bermudian at this
year's event, carding an 82.
Scores were low, on aver-
age, reflecting the hard sur-
facc of the course from this
season's dearth of precipita-
tion.
Relax near
Now is the time of year to
enjoy golf in its autumn
glory: The crisper mornings
and bright fall colours make
walking the course a pleasur-
able experience. With the
season nearly behind you it's
time to relax and forget about
"working" on your game,
lowering your handicap, or
shooting the round of your
life. It's a good time of year
to get a "few lessons to sort
out some little problems- It's
also a good time of year to
think about buying new
clubs. Most pro shops have
fall and winter sales and buy-
ing clubs now gives you a
chance to get used to them so
that you can begin next sea-
son's golf with familiar
sticks.
Shorter days mean ,that the
v'orking golfers and students
may only be able to get nine
holes in during the week.
Weekends offer the opportu-
nity for full I8 -hole rounds
but it's advisable to get tee -
times as thisis the last hurrah
for many keen players and
weekend times get booked up
quickly.
Leaves pose a bit of a prob-
lem in the autumn and often
slow play down a bit as
golfers have to hunt for shots
in the middle of some fair-
ways due to .the autumn
decor. Many clubs implement
the "leaf rule" allowing a free
drop for balls lost in leaves
on the fairway.
Dressing in layers will
allow you to remove or add
clothing so that you can play
through the cooler mornings
Other local winners of the
various flights and prizes
include: Walsh, Nielsen, Brad
Bell, Charlie Smith, Karsten
Carroll, Ron Pryce, John
Patterson, Alex Westerhout,
Gus Feeney, Colin Young,
Ron Stephan, Brad
Maddigan; Brian Little, Bill
Weber, John Cairns, Tucker
Fry, Leo Greidanus, Dennis
Wooley, Gerry Ramsey,
Wayne Schoonderwoerd, Ken
Doig Sr., Bill Maki, John
"Jed" Janmaat, David
Longstaff, Gord McTaggert,
Bob Ahrens, Frank Verheme
and Ross Govier.
Westerhout, in particular,
had a round he'll remember,
shooting a career -best 75.
The first Men's Invitational
for the Commercial Hotel
trophy here was held in 1972.
Pete Robinson won it hack
then with a 72.
The "International
Scramble" held Sunday
morning, in conjunction with
this weekend's Invitational.
had 60 participants. The win-
ning team was made up of
Brad Finlayson, Jeremy Ford.
Don Morton and Gerard
Meidinger.
