In a lot of ways the third
game of the Huron County
Fastball League's semi-finals
Friday in Goderich was like
watching the U.S. Open.
There were five lead
changes in the first three
innings before Seaforth's Reds
staved off elimination and won
the game going away, 13-7
over the hometown Dukes.
Despite the loss, the Dukes
remain in the driver's seat of
the best of five series with a
two games to one lead. Game
four is this Friday night at
Lions Park in Seaforth at 7:30
p.m. Game five (if necessary)
will be played Sunday at 8
p.m. in Goderich.
The defending champion
Brussels Tigers hold a two
games to none lead on the
Exeter Braves in the other
1-1CF1. semi-final.
The Reds had something to
prove after being mercied in
the second game of the series
thc week before.
They put their lead-off run-
ner aboard in each of the first
five innings, which helped
their cause. Those leadoff run-
ners later scored four times.

Rangers at arena Saturday
The Major Junior Kitchener
Rangers travel to the Scaforth
arena for an inter -squad exhi-
bition game this Saturday
evening, in support of
Bayfield Minor Hockey.
Seaforth is also the home-
town of former Rangers stars,
Boyd Devereaux and Davc
McLlwain.
A variety of events arc
planned for the Rangers on
this night including a pre-
game autograph session (6:15
p.m.) and an opportunity for
minor hockey players to suit
up for the game with the
Rangers.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.;
ticket prices include a ticket
to the Seaforth game and a
game ticket for the Nov. 1,
OHL regular season game
when the Rangers host the
Plymouth Whalers at the
Kitchener Auditorium. A
portion of the proceeds from
the September 19 exhibition
game will he donated to
Bayfield Minor Hockey.
"This is an excellent oppor-
tunity for the Rangers to
'assist Bayfield Minor
Hockey as well as provide a
fun and vibrant atmosphere
for our players in a small
community. We arc very
excited about helping the
communities of Bayfield and
Seaforth. Our primary goal is
to have fun with the intention
of raising significant dollars
for minor hockey," said Brad
Sparkes, manager of market-
ing and public relations for
the Kitchener Rangers
Hockey Club.
Tickets are currently avail-
able for purchase at the
Scaforth Arena (519-527-
1272)
Anyone purchasing tickets
for this event who currently
play minor hockey will also
be eligible to suit up with the
Rangers on Saturday with a
selected -number of tickets
heing drawn for this •unique
opportunity.
Seaforth opened Friday
night's game with back -to -
hack singles by pitcher Steve
Leonhardt and shortstop Jason
Murray. A one -out Darren
Akey single and a Jim Roth
flyout to left produced two
runs.
Goderich retaliated in their
half of the first with three, to
take a one -run lead.
But Seaforth answered in
the top of the second when
Trevor Price singled to open
the inning. A passed hall and a
Toby Phillips' sacrifice moved
the Reds' catcher to third.
Leonhardt singled to cash
Phillips and later scored on a
Murray single.
The Dukes never quit and
battled hack to even the score
at four in the bottom of the
inning. •
The lead changed hands
once again. and for the final
time, in the third when
Scaforth scored a pair of runs.
A walk, error and stolen base
added to the Dukes woes.
That third inning highlight-
ed Seaforth's ability to use the
sacrifice to their advantage.
The Reds were successful with
hack -to -hack -to -back hunts
highlighted by a suicide
squeeze with Price (hunting)
and Roth (running).
From that point the Dukes
tried to rebound but Seafi)rth
scored once in the fourth,
twice in the sixth and four
times in the seventh.
Seaforth's Leonhardt,
despite a shaky start, settled
down after surrendering thc
Dukes' fifth run. He retired 14
of 19 hatters from that point
on. The Reds infield worked
well in recording 12 outs dur-
ing the game.
On the other side of the dia-
mond, Dukes' chucker Ken
Daer was the victim of some
poor defence that saw the
Dukes give Scaforth some
extra chances.
In two plus innings of work
Daer allowed six runs on nine
hits, striking out one. Daer's
fate could have been much
kinder hut Goderich stranded
six base runners in the first
and third innings. Relief pitch-
er Hurd allowed seven runs on
nine hits. while fanning five.
