Course will help build confidence
Dear Editor: become willing to take lead-
ership roles in their commu-
nity. Locally, over 150 people
have graduated from the
Christopher Leadership
Course.
It is a tremendous opportu-
nity rarely found in a small
community to develop speak-
ing skills and to have that
renewed confidence to get up
Have you ever been at a
meeting and were too afraid
to stand up and ask a ques-
tion or you had to make a
presentation and you dreaded
the whole experience? Take
the Christopher Leadership
Course.
This is a non -denomina-
tional course coming to this
area starting Wed. Sept. 30 at
Northside United Church,
Seaforth. It will build self-
confidence, and speaking
techniques that will teach a
person how to control ner-
vousness; how to put together
an effective talk and how to
present it so it commands the
audience's attention.
Letters
It runs for 11 weeks, one
night a week from 7-10 p.m.
A team of trained instructors,
who have taken the course
themselves will teach the
class of 25 students. Over
2500 students graduate each
year from the course that is
governed by the Lumen
Institute of Canada. The
course is federally registered
as educational and the fees of
$125.00 are tax deductible.
With these skills graduates
have found that they have
and present your ideas. If you
wish to register or get more
information call 519-345-
2152 or visit our web site at
http:/home.ican.net/-.para-
digm/christophers/. Take that
step to build a more confi-
dent you.

Council says no to Street Smart program

Seaforth Council defeated a
motion to participate in
Heritage Canada's "Street
Smarts" program at last
Tuesday, night's meeting.
It would,have.required,"a
financial contribution of
$500; a local co-ordinator,
promotion and registration
services, meeting space,
equipment, refreshments and
15 to 20 people to partici-
pate," with additional accom-
modation expenses for the
program's "trainer" plus costs
for a member of the commu-
nity to attend a one -day sym-
posium, according to the spe-
cial report of deputy -clerk
Cathy Garrick.
She said it was like " a mini
Main Street program."
"I would feel more com-
fortable if someone from the
community rathcr than
Heritage Canada had first
approached us," Coun. Lin
Steffler said.
She voted against the
motion, as did Coun. Heather
Robinet, which was sufficie
to defeat it.
Coun. Michael Hak was

Hodgins abstained. Reev

Reeve Bill Teall were absent

"I would like you to send
me a letter stating your hon-
est and candid thoughts on
the future of the St.
Columban Church building,"
it states. These letters will be

warded" to the bishop.
"The purpose of your
response is to give the dioce-

the sentiment of the parish
community.
"I ask you to give this
important issue your atten-
tion with serious thought,
deep reflection and genuine
prayer to bring some resolve
and healing to our parish
community," his letter con-
cludes.
As of Friday morning, Fr.

had been forwarded, but he is

MET SEPT. 3
Deputy -clerk Garrick said
she was "a little disappoint-
ed" that only "eight or nine
people" from three local
committees (business reten-
tion, business improvement,
and architectural conserva-
tion advisory) showed up for
a meeting on the "Street
Smarts" program at Town
Hall on Sept. 3.
Coun. Steffler said the
deputy clerk's report indicat-
ed 15 to 20 was the required
minimum for the program.
In her report Garrick noted
the town was not in a posi-
tion to provide staff services,
and the program would have
to find a volunteer co-ordina-
tor, perhaps sharing the func-
tion among various members.
"The 1989 Strectscape
Master Plan addressed some
of the revitalization needs of
the downtown, and this pro-
gram may be similar," it
states. "Street Smarts would
bring together the various
groups in town to work co-
operatively and build on the
