Exposure good experience
CONTINUED from Page 1.
"l"ve never worked on a
farm before," he said.
Although he lives in
Edmonton, Lief is from Nova
Scotia and has travelled across
Canada so exposure to farm-
ing has been a good experi-
ence for him.
"I really like it," he said. At
first, he was uncomfortable
but said he's able to joke and
work well with other farm
staff now.
But he is looking forward to
the Thailand half of the
exchange when he can learn
from Paded.
Already, Lief can speak
some Thai and Paded is work-
ing on English. They work
with hooks to help translate
difficult words and phrases
but have already learned much
from each other.
Lief said one of the chal-
lenges has been having to
(earn the pig operation at the
same time he and Paded have
had to learn to work together
across culture and language
harriers.
Even without being there.
Lief has discovered how dif-
ferent culture is in Thailand
and Paded has found the
same, first-hand in Canada.
It is difficult for him to
describe thc difference here
hut he stresses how much
more technology there is all
around.
On Oct. 15, the second half
of the exchange begins with
the young people travelling to
Thailand where they will live
with Thai families and work
on agricultural projects there.
Applications being accepted
Canada World Youth is
accepting applications from
across Ontario for its
exchange programs beginning
next summer.
It is a national, non-profit
organization offering youth
exchange for people between
the ages of 17 and 29.

months living and working in
a small Canadian community
and three months in an
exchange country. During the
entire exchange, the partici-
pants aro paired with a coun-
terpart from the other country.
The program is directed
toward youth interested in
volunteerism, travel and learn-
ing about community and eco-
nomic development.
The exchange taking place
in Huron County is based in
Seaforth and places students
in agriculturally related work-
places. Other exchanges see
young people volunteering for
local government, programs
and services in Canada and
the exchange country.
Currently, Canada World
Youth is operating exchanges
. iia Begin, Burkina Faso, Cuba.

Ivory Coast, Indonesia,

program arc available at The
