IS—THE HURON EXPOSITOR, AUGUST 26, UMW Seatbelts useless if not used right Local moms hold car seat clinic to help parents use seats properly BY SCOTT HILGENDORFF Expositor Editor While seatbelts and car seats can save lives. they can also be useless or deadly if used incorrectly. "Just because we have our kids in a car seat doesn't mean we're using it properly." said Terri Shobbrook who organized a car seat clinic for area parents earlier this month. Shobbrook always had a • rule that the car did not move if her children weren't buckled in. But when she took part in a seat belt clinic through the Huron County Health Unit. within five minutes. she realized she hadn't been using her car Seats correctly. "Car ,seats look like they're so easy to use but they're not." she said. adding car manufacturers and seat makers don't seem to communicate to help make it easier to use them" "I couldn't believe there was an eight-hour course," said Shobbrook who took a course to become qualified car seat inspectors. The. course has since been expanded to two days. For that reason, she doesn't recommend buying a car seat for its appearance. Instead. it should be bought for its ability to keep a child securely in place in the event of an accident or sudden stop. Transport Canada reports four types of child restraints manufactured: rear facing infant carriers for children up to 20 pounds; a combination seat that can be McNichol aiming for Olympic s The granddaughter of a Seaforth couple will be competing with the Canadian Women's Basketball team for a place in the 2000 Olympic Games in Australia. Four teams qualify from the Americas with the United States and Brazil as the favorites. She has also signed a professional contract to play basketball in Barcelona this month. At Laurentian, the was an (MA all-star. used as a rear -facing carrier for infants or as a front - facing seat for toddlers between 20 and 40 pounds; booster cushions used for children who have outgrown the combination seat betWeen 40 pounds and 60 pounds that help. position the adult seat belt for a better fit; integrated child seat. built into the vehicle seat bench for children between 20 and 60 pounds. Infant carriers. should always he installed so they face the back of the vehicle. This is done because the force of a sudden stop or collision is spread evenly over the infant's body. If the baby is thrown forward. the undeveloped muscles of the' neck and back would not be able to withstand the pressures. The infant is restrained by a harness, and the carrier is anchored by the vehicle's seat belt. When used for an infant, the combination seat faces the rear of the vehicle and the baby is held in position by the carrier's harness system. The seat is 'secured by the. vehicle's seat belt. Toddlers using the seat should sit in•thc rear of the vehicle in a front -facing position. The age of the child is a factor in using the seat as much as weight. A child at four or five months old may • he. 20. pounds but should still he in a rear -facing seat because the child's muscles aren't strong enough to support its head weight. Booster cushions. which are for children .more than 40 pounds in weight; give extra ,height to adjust a seat belt, properly over the hips. The cushion is secured by the vehicle's seat tielt system. The seat is too small when the middle of the child's ear is over the vehicle seat' or head restraint. Some vehicles have child restraint systems built into the seat bench meaning integrated seats don't require tether straps. These are forward -facing seats used for toddlers at least one year old. Shobbrook said the instructions for installing a seat can be complicated and that 90 per cent Of them are installed incorrectly. Through the local playground Shobbrook is a part of. she has had many new moms ask her to check their carseats to be sure they've been bolted and, McLaughlin Chev-Olds Ltd. 13 Main St. Seatorth. 527-1140 *Service *Selection *Savings •Satisfaction *Leasing *Complete BODY SHOP Service THE HURON -PERTH CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD STUDENT REGISTRATION JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN -GRADE 12/O.A.C.
