Catholic high school
teachers across Huron and
Perth Counties have voted 92
per cent in favor of striking
the first day of school if a
settlement is not reached
between 'the Huron Perth
Secondary Unit of the
Ontario English Catholic
Teachers Association and the
Huron -Perth Catholic District
School Board.
"If it becomes necessary."
said Mike Ennett, a
spokesperson for the
Secondary Unit on Tuesday
morning.
Discs taken
from car
Twelve compact discs and a
remote control for a car stereo
were stolen from a 1988
Plymouth Reliants that was
left unlocked on Centre Street
in Seaforth.
The theft was reported Aug.
17 and occurred during the
night.
Shed and vehicle entered at
Huronview
An engineer at Huronview.
near Clinton. found a shed
had been broken into on Aug.
18.
During the night, the lock
had been pried off but nothing
appeared to have been taken.
Investigating OPP also
observed a vehicle had been
entered and searched. Again,
nothing appeared to be
missing.
Brussels garage entered
An alarm brought OPP to
McNeil's Auto Body at 3:30
a.m. in Brussels on Aug. 19.
OPP found someone had
entered the garade through a
window. The person who
entered the garage had to be
small because of the 12 -inch
by 19 -inch size of the
window.
Once inside. the person
opened the front door which
set off the alarm.
Nothing was stolen.
Car stolen from Brucefield
. A 1985 Oldsmobile was
stolen from Bayfield Road in
Brucefield between midnight
and 9 a.m. on Aug. 19.
The vehicle, a blue. four -
door 1988 Delta was left
unlocked and the keys were in
the ignition.
Its licence plate number is
980WJP.

Seaforth
About 58(8) in damage was
caused after a window at
Triangle; Discount was
smashed at about 2:30 a.m. on
Aug. 21.

arguing and saw a man punch

male. about six feet. two
inches tall in his early 20s
with dark hair. He was with a

The teachers met Monday
night in Seaforth where the
voted in favor of a strike
option.
The teachers are currently
negotiating their first
collective agreement under
Bill 160 and Ennett said if an
agreement is not reached,
teachers will be in a position.
to take action Sept. 8, the
first day classes are
scheduled to begin.
Ennett said they have not
determined whether their
action will be in the form of
work to rule or a comb'_ i.
strike.
The board and t,
meet again next
continue negotiations.
At issue are salary and
benefits but more
importantly, Ennett said is
the issue of preparation time.
"It's about the board's
decision to have teachers
teach seven periods out of
eight rather than six," he
said.
With a semestered system,
that leaves teachers with one
semester where they do not
have a free period for
preparing their classes,
helping students, meeting
with parents or helping with
stra-curricular activities.
Ennett said the board has
offered to have two-thirds of
the teachers with seven
classes and one-third
receiving six.
But he said the
association's position is still
set at six classes.
A spokesperson for the
board was not available at
press time.
Ennett said Monday's vote
was scheduled two months
ago, in preparation for this
situation.
He said other associations
held votes in June while
some are holding theirs now.
He hasn't heard of one
association yet that hasn't
voted overwhelmingly in
favor of striking.

Services

shared
with
Seaforth
Tuckersmith agreed to share
certain municipal services with
Seaforth at the township's
council meeting on Aug. 4.
Council also passed a motion
to recommend to Huron
County that it "not waste
taxpayer money studying a
single tier system (of
restructuring) given the clear
understanding of this council
that a clear majority of councils
within the county prefer a two-
tier system of government."
The township 'referred a
request for permission to
construct a skate board ramp on
municipal property to its
insurance company for a
recommendation.
Council accepted, with regret,
the resignation of resource
teacher Christine Coombs from
the Tuckersmith Day Care
Centre.
Clinic will have seven
physicians on staff

hazards of hcing in a
community with only a few
doctors and hcing on-call
twenty-four hours a day..
The resources at the clinic
reduce that and they hope
will allow them to balance
families lives with their
work.
Yce said many of the
doctors at the clinic are
younger which is another
appeal because they share
similar ideas and
experiences.
They've also found the
friendliness of small-town
life appealing.
The addition of Yec and
Martin. with the pending
departure of Dr. Janet Zettel,
brings the compliment at the
clinic to seven physicians.
Gwcn Devereaux, business
manager at the clinic, said
this is the result of their work
recruiting doctors to the
clinic.
"We have a nicc group of
physicians to work with,"
she said.
Patient volume at the clinic
has grown with invitations
from Blyth and Brussels to
see patients from those
communities where there are
fewer doctors.
Every patient at the clinic
has a personal physician and
recruitment helps ensure they
can see their own doctors.

Here's what our

A school where I felt welcome.
mainly due to being a smaller
school. 1 looked at my previous
grade reports from another
college versus Lambton College
and I noticed that my grades
went up by approximately 2
grades. The instructors were
easy to approach. The school
itself was well maintained. Very
clean, bright and open.

I.ambton College teachers and

so thankful 1 had this opportu-
nity through the assistance of
Native Affairs and Ontario
Hydro to be a graduating
student of the Social Service
Worker program. 1 will
probably always be returning
for more education and
community work.
It makes living in the Sarnia-
