12-2 record means up to Division 1 next year
St. Columban's women lose for a change
BY GREGOR CAMPBELL
Expositor Staff
The St. Columhan women's
soccer team smothered
London City's goalkeeper
with quality chances but•
couldn't connect Sunday
night.
They lost for only the sec-
ond time this season in
Division 2/North of the
London & Area Women's
Soccer League, finishing on
the short end of a 2-0 score at
the St. Columban field.
The loss was meaningless
in terms of the standings. St.
Columhan. now with a 12-2
won -loss record and and
impressive 40-6 goals for and
against differential, had
already clinched first -place in
the division and earned pro-
motion to the league's
Division 1 next season.
Still, the shutout didn't sit
well with coach Frank
Verbeme.
"If that shot was on it was
in," he muttered repeatedly as
he paced thc sidelines in frus-
tration during the game.
"The best team didn't win
tonight," he said after. "We
out -played them positionally
and territorially. But we were
unlucky around the net.
"We could have easily
scored four in the first hiilf."
The coach's observation
was right on.
London City rarely had the
ball in St. Columban's end in
the first half.
But the local ladies couldn't
finish to save their souls.
It was 0-0 at the half. The
visitors broke the deadlock
early in the second half on a
corner kick.
Their second goal came
about 30 minutes later on a
play from a throw in from the
corner, that got tipped,
changed direction and tricked
the keeper, Melissa
Robertson.
Even then, St. Columhan
had ample opportunity in the
second 45 minutes to equal-
ize, but just couldn't find the
range this evening.
The team's only other loss
this season was to the
London Rebellions, also by a,

IMPROVING
St. Columban had a
women's team that played its
home games in Mitchell eight
years ago, but returned to the
new women's league last sea-
son and started playing home
games on their new home
pitch. Coached by James
Sampa and Steve Ryan, they
finished fourth and played
about .500 football their first
season back. •
Verberne coached St.
Columban's men to a Second
Division title and a First
Division Cup in the early
1980s, and also coached the
women to a Second Division
Cup during a successful
three-year span..
He hadn't coached since
then, and returned :because
they asked me," he says.
He's glad he did.
"I'm. not always an easy
coach to play for," he said
after Sunday's loss. "But I've
enjoyed it.
"This is a great group, the
talent is spread even. It is one
of the most coachable teams
I've ever had."
This year's squad ranges in
age from 18 to early -40s.
Players are: Teresa
Finlayson, Bonnie Rapicn,
Sally Chaffe, Peg Sloan,
Monica Ryan, Andrea
Flanagan, Jane Crowley,
Julianne Crowley, Julianne
Ryan, Robyn Carnochan,
Annette De Groot, Tara
Flanagan, Crystal Whytc,
Melissa Robertson (keeper),
Jo -Anne Terpstra, Kathleen
Moylan, Aimee d&Vries,
Cathy Coyne, Frank Verberne
(coach), Faye Murray (train-
er). '
Sunday's tilt was the team's
final home game of this regu-
lar season. They play once
more on the. road, this
Sunday against London
Delco.
BRAGGING RIGHTS
Division 2 is itself split into
two divisions this season, a
North and a South. St.
Columban bested all comers
in the North in the division
table - the Rebellions,
London City, - Godcrich,
Exeter, Lucan and the
London Hornets.
London Southend and St.
Thomas arc still battling it
out for the South crown.
When that is determined,
St. Columban will play the
South champ for bragging
rights and the overall league
title, at a neutral ground.
But both Division2 champs
get promoted to Division I
next year.
