Doig Jr. and Al Nigh.

quite a social event with
many new guests as well as
members participating. Pat
Shields was the winner of

Sunday in time for the open-
ing of his sixth annual two-
week hockey camp here in
town. It is full to brimming
with more than 200 young
hockey players registered
this month.
Dave will play in tonight's
annual "Summer Showcase"
game the local arena, but
then he flies back to Bern
tomorrow. His new team
wouldn't release him for the
_remaining week and a bit of
his camp:
At the end of last season,
McLlwain figured he'd be
playing somewhere in North
America this year and there
wouldn't be any conflict with
his hockey camp.
"THAT'S HOCKEY"
Dave says he feels bad
about having to go back this
week, even though his school
has experienced. iirstructors
who can handle it.
"But that's hockey," he
shrugs.
He should know.
In a National Hockey
League career that lasted the
best part of 10 seasons, the
local hockey product scored
exactly 100 goals in 501'
games with six teams
(Pittsburgh, Toronto, Ottawa,
New York Islanders,
Winnipeg, Buffalo), and with
two of those teams twice
(Islanders and Penguins).
Then it was off to the
Cleveland Lumberjacks
where he was one of the top
snipers in the International
Hockey League for a couple
of campaigns. -
"BETTER OFFER"
Last season with •Landshut
was his first in Europe.
He is looking forward to
the Swiss league where dubs
are each only allowed three
imports. The German league
was a bit of a shmozzlc last
year, with thc rules changed
to allow each team almost
unlimited imports. only
requiring five German -horn
players.
"Bern's offer was Netter
than Landshut's." says Dave.
"And it was a two-year deal."
After more than a decade of
the high-intensity North
American pro hockey grind.
McLlwain found the lighter
game and practice schedule
his first season in Europe dif-
ficult to adjust to.
He feels Bern will be a bet-
ter fit.
• It is a city with a population
of approximately 150,000,
close to other towns.
The other two imprirts on
his new team arc also former
Leafs - Dan Martis anti
Alexander Godyniuck.
The team finished in thc
middle of thc standings of the
11 -team league last season,
and got put out in the quarter
finals. Two seasons ago they
won the Swiss title. The
teams play a 45 -game sched-
ule, which for Bern begins
Sept. 12.
