Main breaks
Old pipes combined with
increased pressure from the
town's new water tower
caused a watermain to break
at Main and Centre Streets in
Scaforth at about 5 p.m. on
Aug. 12. No sooner had pub-
lic utility workmen repaired
that and turned on the water,
when there was another break
at a hydrant farther north on
the street. PUC manager Tom
Phillips says worn out pipe
combined with greater pres-
sure from the town's new
water tower were contrihut=
ing factors.
Workmen finally made it
home about midnight.

Horse spooked, child dies
A one -year-old Wingham-
arca child died of a head
injury hours after being air-
lifted to London's Sick
Children's Hospital after
being kicked by a horse last
Wednesday night.
Ontario Provincial Police
say Amos Martin "was struck
in the head by the hooves of
the hdrse as it was prancing
about." His father, Manassah
Martin, 34, "was removing
the horse from the Karn when
it spooked, knocking over the
child" at about 8 p.m. on
Conc. 16 of Howich
Township.
Police say "the father took
the child to the house and
then went to a neighbour for
help, due to no phone or
owning a vehicle."
The child died at about
noon.
Seaforth hospital was ready
Motocrossers made of stern stuff
They're a stoic hunch who
don't complain about thc pain.
That's what Scaforth
Community Hospital staff
have to say about the flow of
motocross riders who come
through the emergency room
during the four-day Canadian
National Motocross
Championships.
"They certainly deal well,"
said Jane McNaughton, an
emergency room nurse on
Friday of thc patients who
come through, often with mul-
tiple fractures that will require
surgery and weeks of follow-
up with their hometown doc-
tors.
Most of thc crashes take
place in the afternoons, during
competition. Practice runs are
held in the mornings and don't
result in as many patients as
the actual races.
While the emergency room
might by busier in the after-
noons, McNaughton said it's
not like an emergency involv-
ing a bus accident where extra
staff and supplies might be
needed. The emergency room
is equipped to handle the extra
patients thc motocross races
provide.
While extra staff aren't
required in the emergency
room, there is usually an extra
person called in to work in x-
ray. That's because of the
extra demand for a closer look
at what type of injury the per-
son might have.
"It keeps us busy," said
McNaughton.
But she said they arc a good
group of patients who don't
complain.
She thinks it's because
some of thetn have been
through it more than once.
Last year, she recognized
thc father of one racer after
having treated that racer's
brother thc year before.
Many of the injuries are
serious and McNaughton said
they require surgery.
They will stabilize the
patient and try to transfer
them to their home town hos-
pital where they can he seen
by a doctor who will treat
them through surgery and the
weeks of recovery that fol-
lows.
In the Seaforth emergency
room, the Tess serious are
placed in casts.
"You certainly get experi-
ence putting on casts,"
McNaughton said.
But some crashes at the race
result in serious injuries and
they have had to stabilize rid-
ers with head injuries.
