BY LEE ANN WATERMAN

_Registered practical nurses
(RPNs) working at the Perth -
Huron branch of the Victorian
Order of Nurses (VON) are
still on the picket lines.
Approximately 600 mem-
bers of the Practical Nurses
Federation of Ontario (PNFO)
including five local RPNs,
employed at. 12 VON branch-
es across the province have
been on strike since midnight,
July 3.
•
VON has presented the
RPNs with a contract that
includes a 40 per cent roll -
hack in benefits. a cut in
mileage allowance from 25
cents to 17 cents per kilome-
tre at most of the branches.
including Perth -Huron. and
changes in wording that
would limit the union's rights
in areas such as layoffs.
recall, job 'security and con-
tracting out of services.
- Management at VON says
that the cuts are necessary for
the organization to be able to
compete with other ,agencies
that provide home services.
The striking RPNs however,
would like to see manage-
ment absorb more of the cut-
backs.
"The PNFO believes that if
the VON is seriously consid-
ering restructuring its opera-
tion, it should look at cutting
the cost of overhead at the
branches involved," says
Angie Jones, PNFO president.
"They can cut large numbers
of- managers, their assistants.
their" salaries and their
perquisites, rather than attack-
ing our members, and our
members'. ability to feed their
families."
Lynne McDonald, execu-
tive director of the Perth -
Huron branch, says that is has
always been VON's practice
to treat staff and management
equally in these matters.
"(In the past). whatever
cuts staff take, management
takes as well," says
McDonald. She gives as an
example. social contract
negotiations at the branch
three years ago, when man-
agement and staff all made
concessions. •
"Management, as well as
staff, abided by all decisions
made," she says.
While VON has not yet
announced any cuts to man-
agement salaries or benefits.
McDonald suggests they may
be coming.
The organization is prepar-
ing to bid for next year's con-
tracts; negotiations with the
RPNs are just the first step in
• the process.
"We have to look ahead."
says McDonald. "We have to
plan ahead for next year's
cuts."
She says VON will look at
other places to trim its. budget
once a contract is' reached
with the RPNs. who are the
only unionized workers at the
local branch.
