Sebringville OPP seized
more than marijuana 1150
plants,. in various stages of
growth, they estimate has a
street value of $292,000.
Sophisticated growing
equipment was also seized.
Officers believe a "large
amount of marijuana from the
residence has been
transplanted in a field in a
location within the county."
They request land owners to
contact them if they find
marijuana'plants growing on
their property, or any unusual
activity in their area.

McKillop to pay $100,153
for OPP policing this year
Provincial police have
invoiced McKillop
$100,153 for policing in
1998 under the Ontario
government's restructured
municipal arrangements.
Until this year townships
didn't pay •for policing
directly.
On the plus side. the
province has notified
McKillop it is to get
$584,000 from its
community reinvestment
fund. to help offset thc
increased costs of policing
and the loss of farm tax
rebate revenue. '
McKillop
Township
The township will also get
$13,771.70 in transitional
assistance Ontario's special
circumstances fund.
Council decided when it
met last Tuesday, after a
public meeting attended by
Robert Hulley, to defer an
application for rezoning in
the township, on Highway 8

Farm assessments
high but affect on
taxes not known yet
BY GREGOR CAMPBELL

Farmlands arc assessed for
$39.404.50( more than they
were last year in McKillop
ToWnship because of
complicated changes to
Ontario's tax system.
•
At this time it is difficult to
translate exactly what these
changes in assessment will
mean for farmers paying
taxes on their land. according
to McKillop clerk Marion
McClure.
It doesn't mean those
farmers will necessarily he
paying that much more in
taxes this year, she stresses.
Thcrc is no more mill rate
under thc new system. The
province handed down thc
new rules, under which the
county sets "tax ratios,"
which are new to municipal
tax calculation. province -
wide. '
You multiply tax rate by
assessment to figure out
taxes, and the "tax rate,"
which also didn't exist
before, hasn't been set yet in
thc township. Without the
new tax rates, ratios and
assesments McKillop made
an interim billing based on
last fiscal year's system.
But thc changes in
assessment arc dramatic,
reflecting among other things
the loss of thc farm tax rebate
under the new system.
This year's total assessment
is $149.002,875 in McKillop,
compared to $107.464,353 in
1997.
Last year farmlands were
assessed at $66,514,900 in
McKillop. In 1998 they are
assessed d at $105,919,400.
Residential assessment is
up slightly, to $38,341,980
.from $35,370,005.
Commercial assessment is
down to $3,419,155
(occupied. $2.865,380;
vacant, $502,775; vacant
land $51,000) this year,
compared to $4.081,593 in
1997.
Thcrc was no industrial_
assessment in McKillop last
year. This year industrial
assessment in the township is
$1.262,040 (occupied,
$846,440; vacant, $414,200;
vacant land, $1,4000).
On the other hand,
businesses assessment is
gone altogether. Last year it
was assessed at $1,497,855
in the adjacent township.
This time around the Union
Gas pipeline is assessed at
$40,500 in McKillop, and
Ontario Hydro at $19,800.
Neither category existed
under the previous system.
Listed as exempt under this
year's system is $2,343,125,
compared to $2,426,445 last
year.
Because thc province hasn't
forwarded the figures yet,
municipalities such as
McKillop also don't know
yet what ratepayers will be
paying for education.

It also approved an
application for a permit to
