HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1998-07-08, Page 6II—THE HURON women, JULY 8, 11 Local leftwinger Long Island bound New York is a long way from Edmonton, in more than miles. Though he's a Huron County lad at heart and says he is not as comfortable in big cities, Egmondville's Mike Watt is keen on adjust- ing to 'The Big Apple." "It's a great situation," says Watt, who was traded by the National Hockey League's Edmonton Oilers to the New York Islanders last month. "It is a change for the bet- ter. They are looking for a leftwinger who can play and are counting on me to score and shoot the puck," he said while passing through Seaforth on the weekend. Watt is a leftwinger. He was swaped for Islander goalie Eric Fichaud on June 18. Both are 22 -years -old. "Edmonton needed to cover their back in case 'Cujo' goes," Mike adds. The player he was traded for, Fichaud, is a promising puck -stopper but has had problems with his shoulder. The Oilers need a goalie to cover the expected imminent departure of all-star goal - tender Curtis ("Cujo") Joseph, who is an unrestrict- ed free agent and will proba- bly require the kind of money the Oilers just don't have to re-sign. The exit of Watt breaks up triumvirate of young Seaforth and area hockey players with the Oilers. Rem Murray and Boyd Devereaux remain with Edmonton. MIKE WATT- traded to NHL's Islanders by Edmonton CAMPBELL PHOTO "The weather should be nicer in Long Island," he says, "but I will miss the camaraderie in Edmonton." His former teammates called after the trade to wish hin the best, which Mike said felt kind of nice. NO STRANGER But he knows Brian Smolenski and Geoff Zehr on Any ladies for slo-pitch? He'll he even less of a stranger in a couple of weeks. Since the end of last hockey season Watt had been at East Lansing taking another course at Michigan State University this summer. until Friday when he passed this way before heading off to New York for 10 days for "some media stuff," among other things, with the Islanders. He will be spending much of this time in the Hamptons but will be back in Seaforth and area in plenty of time•to once again help instruct at Dave McLlwain's annual hockey camp. Fichaud was a first-round pick (16th overall) of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1994 NHL entry draft, the same year that Watt went 32nd overall in the second round to Edmonton. Watt played most of last season with the Hamilton Bulldogs, an Oiler's affiliate, and was the fifth -leading rookie goal scorer in the American Hockey League last season. He finished with 24 goals and 25 assists for 49 points (fourth best on the team) and 65 penalty minutes in 63 games. Seven of those goals came on the Bulldogs' powerplay, and one was scored while they were short-handed. He finished with a plus/minus of +7 and his shooting percent- age was 15.7 per cent. He was up with the Oilers for a 14 -game span before Christmas, scoring a goal and an assist. Prior to signing with Edmonton, Watt played with the MSU hockey Spartans, as did Dublin -area's Rem Murray, still with the Oilers. Boyd Devereaux of Scafo'rth also remains with the Oilers. Both Watt and Devereaux also won gold medals in sub- sequent years for winning world championships with Canada's national junior hockey, team.
